MSN Direct

Is MSN Direct Traffic on the 885T FREE LIFETIME like the other traffic that I have on my 660.

The 885T only comes with 3

The 885T only comes with 3 month MSN Direct service.

I called there customer support asking about the "Free Life Time" deal. What they told me is if you purchase the receiver separately you will get the the service for free.

MSN Direct

I just checked out what you are saying , but on MSN web page they are saying that if you purchase your gps without the free trial included they will give you a Free 3 months trial NOT free lifetime.

If you by a unit with the MSN receiver included, you get 3 months free. If you buy the MSN receiver to use on a unit that does not include one, then you get the first year free. Lifetime is an extra cost.

So what does that mean ?

So what does that mean ? They might be gone by then ?

.

It could very well be that the service may be gone by then and be replaced by something else entirely different. If you're into software, PC's, electronics, etc, you know how fast things progress and are obsoleted.

These days, "Lifetime" doesn't mean very much.

Receiving a Strong Signal?

How do you guys position your power/MSN antenna. I find that in order to receive a strong signal I have to let it hang down. I have my GPS placed under the rear view mirror. I find the antenna very sensitive to receiving signal.

Microsoft's long term plans?

MSN Direct has some nice features, but it seems very slow to update. I would not be surprised if they moved to something else. Buyer beware, I suppose! Perhaps they could grandfather current MSN Direct users onto the new system? Anyone have insight into their future plans?

From my understanding with

From my understanding with lifetime deal is with that particular Garmin you have the lifetime subscription with, the service is not transferable between other Garmin GPSR, I had a lifetime subscription on one unit and then I had to replace the unit due it was defective and then MSN gave me a refund and I had to repurchase the lifetime contract all over again.

MSN Long Term Plans & Moving MSN Service From One Unit toAnother

Though I don't know MSN's long term game plan, with the addition of Free Lifetime Traffic Updates to all of Garmins new lineup of GPS units that just came out this month and the fact that MSN is not included (but is optional) on any of them, leads me to believe that the service will eventually go the way of MSN's Smartwatch line. In case you've never heard of them, the smartwatches receive MSN data over the air that's very similar to the data displayed on GPS units with the MSN Service: News, Stocks, Weather, Traffic, & sports scores. Though the MSN Smartwatch service is still active, smartwatches are no longer being manufactured. And to clear up the GPS MSN Service, I just recently moved my MSN service from a 760 to a 755T with no phone call to Microsoft; I simply unplugged it from the 760 and plugged it into the 755T.

I have two MSN receivers

I have two MSN receivers (GDB-50's) and two 760's, one for me and one for my wife, we constantly use each others receivers. The subscription is to the GDB-50 not the GPSR.

That said will they still make GPSR's that connect to the GDB-50 by the year 2014. I would think not. I wouldn't be surprised if they phased it out starting tomorrow.

My MSN Experience

I've been using the MSN service for about half a year. I do feel like it's worth it if you purchase the lifetime service. I believe I paid $99 on Amazon when they had a special deal, but right now it's around $110.

The gas price feature is what I use the most, and that's the one application that makes the purchasing price worthwhile. I save a few dollars every time I fill up, and it really adds up.

The traffic service works well for freeways (and only freeways) in the Chicago area. I've also used my unit in Honolulu during vacation and MSN traffic covered the freeways there very well. I was notified of upcoming traffic way ahead of time.

I don't think I will

I don't think I will subscribe now that my 90 day trial is over. I live to far out in the boondocks, but it has been interesting that even tho I live in the middle of Kansas, it is always telling me of roadwork in Oklahoma City and in Kansas City.

But on our trip this summer - it worked very well in Chicago. It didn't help at all in Montreal or Quebec. and by the time we got to Boston and New York the update bug hit and my 785 died completely in the middle of the trip so no help there.

I think is most useful for

I think is most useful for someone who travels if even a couple of times a year for longer distances. I really like the radar and gas prices. Traffic seems to be pretty good on the highways, hit and miss locally when covered. Like the temp showing. The flight info works very well, though that info can be had on the cell phone also. Overall glad I have it, but I can't say it is a must have for everyone.

yes, you are right. MSN service is not tied to your GPS unit. I have replaced three 765T units and my MSN subscription never got interrupted.

Better

Compared to the FM traffic, the MSN has it beat hands down, my opinion.
