Downloading multiple POI files into Garmin

I donwload walmart locaticons into my computer and named it walmart then downloaded it into my Garmin using POI loader.

Then in my Garmin - selecting - Whereto? / Extras / Custom POIs - the list of walmarts do show up. Then I donwload rest areas and following the same procedures as above I find the Walmarts now don't show up in the Custom POIs but the rest areas do.

Shouldn't these two be listed seperatly in the Custom POI's area?

Where am I going wrong?

Thank you in advance.

Multiple POI Files

That is explained here.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/87

I prefer to create folders for each type under the POI folder on the unit or SD card. I have separate folders on the computer as well. That way I can load each separately and control the alert distance for each.

DON'T load poi files to your

DON'T load poi files to your GPS one after the other...load them at the same time. Place both or multiple poi files in the same folder the POI Loader is loading from.

I load each POI file separately (as you did) but before I load the second one, I check the directory on the gps and find the "poi.gpi" file that was just created by POI-Loader. I then rename "poi.gpi" to "Walmart.gpi"

Then I clear the directory on my computer that I use for loading files with POI-LOADER and copy the rest-area POI into the cleared directory(remember to also copy not only CSV files but related files like BMP and MP3).

When you load the rest area file, POI-LOADER will create a new "POI.gpi" file (without overwriting the Walmart file). Again, rename the new "POI.GPI" file to "Rest-area.gpi"

Icons

Okay, placing the POI's in the same folder seems to have done the job but the icons I had placed there don't show up. Yes I gave them the same name as the POI.

What I Do (Everyone Has Slightly Different Approaches)

jgracy,

What you do is what I wish I had done. Unfortunately, I just created a folder called POIs and dumped my downloads into it and used POI-Loader to add them to my nuvi. Now I bet they're all in one big POI.GPI file.

Can I start over? If I can find the directory on my Mac can I drag its contents to the trash? I clean slate will allow me to adopt your approach.

Thanks,
Bill

There will only ever

be one POI.GPI file. Each time you download to the Nuvi using POIloader, a new POI.GPI file is created, replacing the one already there. Therefore to start clean you really don't need to delete whats on the Nuvi now.

So to answer your question, yes, setup your POI's on the PC adopting whatever system you like then download them to the Nuvi. Your original POI's will be deleted and replaced with the new ones in a new POI.GPI file.

If you want to use the system described by jgracy above, remember to rename the new POI.GPI file to something different before you download the next set of POIs as there can only ever be one file called POI.GPI on the Nuvi at one time.

If you do drag a gpi file to the trash on a Mac, it will still be seen in the trash folder by the gps and the POIs will still show. You must also empty the trash while the gps is attached to avoid this.

Bentbiker,

My trash is empty.

I'm in the same boat as JimandJoan: my icons don't show up. I created a folder on my Mac desktop named POI Art that contains each one, appropriately named, that POI-Loader seems to have ignored and await instructions from an experienced GPSer.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Not sure what you mean.

You don't say whether you deleted the POI.gpi file on the gps. If you did, the Mac creates a trash folder on the gps and puts the file in it. To get rid of it, the trash must be emptied while the gps is connected (since that also empties the trash on peripheral drives). The best bet is to just avoid deleting the gpi file(s) and just overwrite them with POI Loader.

Are you aware?

You won't see an icon file on the gps -- the icons are within the gpi file. Just try this; pick a location under Extras/Custom-POIs and then choose "Show Map" instead of "Go". Tell us whether the icon is the default grey dot, or your custom icon.

Sorry, can't help you on the MAC issue. I looks like your question has been answered by other users already. cool
