Which avoidances do you enable?

I'm curious as to which avoidances people enable, or disable, and why. I am still using the defaults and have just wondered about changing them.

I believe most units have these selections, maybe except for traffic:

U-Turns
Highways
Traffic
Toll Roads
Ferries
Carpool Lanes
Unpaved Roads

Matt

95% of the time

The only two I have checked are U-turns and Traffic. Anything else is for specific short term use, like hiking or when I have no change in my pockets for tolls.

Avoidances

I typically have:

U-Turns
Traffic &
Unpaved Roads

Selected. However when I take a long distance cross country Interstate/Freeway trip I plan to add

Highways.

Reason being that if you need to make a major Interstate direction change, such as from West to North, my old c330 wanted to take me onto U.S. and state highways instead staying with the recommended Interstate/Freeway interchange. I had to fake a "Via Point" to a city shortly after the interchange then ignore the Via Point when came up, to keep the GPS on the right track. I'm hoping that on my next trip in Oct. that setting Avoidances to "Highways", in addition, will resolve this issue.

I like it smile

I usually set unpaved roads only.

What are the ramifications of setting Traffic as an avoidance? My unit seems to re-route me when it sees traffic issues ahead...

thx.

In my area there is a toll road that I want to avoid so I set mine to:

1. U-turns
2. Toll Roads

I do unpaved road, but that

I do unpaved road, but that never seems to work cause it has taken me down some.

I also do tolls, cause I never carry cash with me. However, there are times where you have to do tolls. Try to get from VA to MA with tolls disabled.

I ENABLE U-turns cause it will go WAY out of the way to avoid them sometimes and it is easier to just do a U-turn.

Thanks for the hint about "Traffic". I just went from a c330 that didn't have traffic to an 885T which does, so I'll have to play with it to see what works best.

Try to get from Toronto Ontario to Buffalo New York with Toll Roads set as an avoid. It turns a pretty short trip into an adventure for the whole family wink

just 2

RIght now I only use 2 avoidances....
Toll Roads and Carpool Lanes...

Toll roads just on principle of the thing...we've got a couple of them around here. ANd the FIrst toll road i know of in the US - the PA Turnpike...started in the 50s is STILL a toll road even though it was prommised to be toll only long enough to pay for the road....

GOt Carpool lanes enabled too. Like most people in LA, i'm normally by myself in the car, and the fine starts at $271 for a car pool violation last I checked....

Avoidances -

I have avoidances disabled on my Nuvi 660. I figure I can go another way if I don't like how things are coming up. Also, I always check the total trip picture function by touching the top of the screen when I'm venturing out into the unknown.

avoidances none

I err on the side of caution and engage none of the avoidances.

Well with the traffic avoidance off you will get a yellow caution sign with a time in it showing a delay on your current route. You can then poke the yellow sign and find out what the cause is and detour around it if you want. With traffic avoidance on it will automaticlly reroute you with out your knowing.

I like to avoid ferries, off road and carpool lanes. I rarely have people with me, so if I do I'll just suck it up and figure the path out myself or take the regular roads.

Now that you mention it, I must have had it unchecked at some point in the past because I've seen the yellow time sign and noticed the resulting map that shows where the traffic is.
I noticed this past weekend navigating a frequently used route that my 660 wanted to reroute me.
I was curiously amused.
Now I know why.
Thanks!

Traffic only

I only have Traffic checked. Sometimes I check Dirt Roads but other times I uncheck that option.

I tried having U-Turns checked but......... I missed a turn and crossed a highway. The next place the unit wanted me to turn was 9 miles away. I ignored the unit and made a U-Turn and got to my destination quickly. Avoiding U-Turns isn't always a good idea..........

Avoidances

Unpaved Roads...

When traffic shows up, I take a look at it and manually avoid depending on the amount of delay. Even then, if it's less than 5 minutes, I just stay on route since I know it will take even longer on the side streets.

Unpaved Roads Only

as for Traffic I leave it off and when I see the Yellow warning label. I check to see what the delay is and how far I have to go to reach it. I then decide if I want to detour and when. Many times it clears up before I get to it.

avoidance

I avoid U-Turns and Unpaved Roads.

I prefer to take highways whenever I can.

Without a traffic receiver, I have no way of knowing the traffic.

There's a toll road nearby that I take almost daily.

I took ferries in Washington all the time.

Other than that, I'd like to avoid facing myself in the mirror, but that doesn't seem to be an option.

a month ago I was in Tulsa, OK and they have the Creek Turnpike there on the east & south of town and everytime I wanted to go somewhere it wanted me on the toll road so for the short time I was there I had to check the tolls too.

Carpool or not to carpool.

I am afraid that if I shut off the avoidance for carpool lanes that it will route me through one when I don't have a second person on board.

Here's Mine

y = Checked, n = unchecked

y - U-Turns
n - Major Roads
y - Toll Roads (I turn this off when going thru the US, otherwise I use this to avoid the stupid 407 Toll rip-off)
n - Traffic
n - Ferries
n - Car Share Lanes
y - Unpaved Roads

(I revised your options to what are actually on my 760 in the order they are listed)

mostly u-turns

u-turns and traffic.

U-turns, toll roads and

U-turns, toll roads and unpaved roads when in the car and add highways when I am on my motorcycle.

What I avoid...

I typically only avoid traffic. If I avoid uturns the garmin sometimes sends me on a wild goose chase to get back. Uturns are a lot faster

u-turns??

I gotta say I dont see the point of avoiding uturns....

Only thing I bother with is Toll Roads, well and ferries. There's only one ferry around here, but it does creep me out a bit....its more of a pontoon boat than a real ferry....

avoidances

I mostly use gps when my wife and kid are in car so I only avoid unpaved roads and ferries. In NYC, no point in going anywhere if avoiding toll roads or highways.

avoidances

I have traffic and U turns set up. That tied with the free traffic feature was a wonderful surprise recently. On a trip from long Island to upstate NY the LIE was closed between certain exits. As I'm driving down the road, about 30 miles from the road closure, all of a sudden I saw the red car icon appear and then it automatically said - recalculating due to road closure ahead. Once more while on the rerouted road, it came up and said extreme traffic ahead (yea first time I heard that phrase) and automatically rerouted me again. My final arrival time was within 10 min of my original time. Traffic feature and the avoid setup is one I will always use
