HELP - background reversed, now dark

First post here. I found this forum earlier today, had fun installing POI Loader and the plug-in to allow Google maps to install coordinates directly into Favorites. Great resource.

I use my GPS primarily for motorcycle touring. I can't afford the bike-specific models, and the Nuvi works fine, as it is pretty well protected by the windshield.

When I booted the Nuvi 250 up again a few minutes ago, rather than the normal, light-colored background, now my background is very dark blue, with streets and street names in white. Radio buttons in the menus are white when selected, not dark.

I changed / played with many settings today, trying out info from this and Gary Hayman's site, so I can't pinpoint specifically what may have cause the change.

HELP!

Thank you.

Normal nuvi behavior

I suspect what you are seeing is normal behavior. My nuvi changes to the dark background at about sunset to aid night-time driving.

Check tomorrow morning... you should see the light background again.

Well, you posted this message at 6:54 PM. Could the nuvi simply have switched to night mode?

Touch Tools/Settings/Display/ and check your brightness level--AND color mode. If Color Mode is Auto, nuvis switch to nighttime mode around sunset. Or if you've set it to Nighttime, it'll be like that all the time.

[Edit] Darn, you other two repliers are quicker than me! wink

White buttons?

Note to other responders that the OP's radio/selection buttons are reported as being WHITE.

If your menu buttons are now WHITE, then something is definitely wrong since they are always dark blue regardless of the daytime/nighttime color mode.

1. Try changing the color mode anyways (Tools>Settings>Display>Color Mode) to daytime/night time back and forth a few times and see if this helps jar it back to normal.

2. Soft reset the unit: Press and hold the power switch for approx. 20 seconds or so.

3. Hard reset the unit: You will lose your favorites so first copy x:/Garmin/current.gpx to a backup area. To restore them after the hard reset, copy them back to the same folder on the nuvi but rename the file to temp.gpx. After a power-cycle (or two), they will be back on the unit.

Hard reset: power the unit off, then press the AND HOLD the bottom-right corner of the screen and power the unit on. Continue to press the screen until the prompt appears to "Clear all user data". Select "yes" and the unit will hard reset, then power-cycle.

4. Reflash the current firmware (or unit software) or update to a newer version if you're unit is not up to date: Run WebUpdater. If a newer firmware update is found install it. If no new update is found, select the option to "Reinstall the same version"

One of these should help get your unit back to it's previous state.

White when selected

On my nuvi 750 in nighttime mode or at night in Auto Color Mode, my radio buttons are white when selected as the original poster is seeing. To me, this is an indication of nighttime mode working as it should.

.

"white when selected" (or pressed/touched?) seems to be the confusing phrase here. However, I just verified this and on both my 760 and my 765, the buttons are yellow-orange when pressed, regardless of the daytime/nighttime color mode. The Settings/Where Am I?/Help/etc buttons (under Tools) are white in daytime mode, dark blue in nighttime mode. As I mentioned above, regardless of the color mode, they are all yellow-orange when pressed.

Is this different on the 2x0 units?

Night-time mode seems to be the correct answer

since it is back to normal this morning.

I rarely ride the bike at night, and I had not seen the GPS do this color shift before.

The possibility that it was time-related had occurred to me though, so before posting I switched the timezone setting to several places where it would have been light, and it did not change the display.

Thanks for the quick replies. This forum is a great source of info and help!

The issue may be "radio button"

Yes, your "menu items" color as you say they will. The OP referred to radio buttons, the small circles to be chosen on some menus (such as on the Color Mode page). On the Color Mode page, for example, the radio buttons are black when selected in daytime mode and white when selected in nighttime mode.

So the confusion may have arisen between rectangular menu item buttons and the occasional small circular radio buttons some pages offer.

In any event, I'm glad to hear that the OP's issued has resolved itself--at sunrise wink

You can't fool the GPS...

A valiant effort! But you can't fool the GPS. wink It's knows where you are, and the day/night logic is based on the sunset/sunrise time at your present physical location, regardless of things like what time zone you choose to display.

Assuming your unit has a "simulator" mode, where you can turn off the GPSR and actually plug in coordinates to tell the GPS you are somewhere else, *then* you could fool it into thinking it was day time. All academic for this discussion, I know, but I thought it was interesting. wink

I really love the day/night mode switch on my Zumo (which I use on my bikes). I also recently "discovered" (i.e. remembered what I long since forgot) that it has a brightness adjustment also, so I even turn down the brightness at night time and it's much more pleasant to view at night.

The Nuvi proved it is smarter than me

Yes, The Nuvi proved it is smarter than me!

I rediscovered the brightness adjustment while playing with it this week. 90% contrast works much better in sunshine, and since it is plugged into a power point on the bike, no worry about power consumption.

Wish a Zumo would find it's way into my Christmas stocking!
