Not doing anything worth a darn.

New POI?

would it be possible to make a new POI that avoids streets that have load limits or say no trucks? and could it include the exclusion of narrow road? This would be helpfu to truckers and RV drivers.

Wow

That sounds like it would take a lot of time and patience, not to mention driving a route to find all the restrictions.
I have a 650 that lists different vehicles under navigation.
It lists things like pedestrian, bicycle, truck, bus, emergency, and taxi besides the car/motorcycle.
I know this doesn't help you much but maybe you can beg or borrow one if you know somebody that has one.

Unfortunately, Custom POIs do not work as avoidances.

And be careful with the "truck/bus" routing on some units. It isn't guaranteed to avoid roads that trucks can't go on.

Insert subject line here...

I did notice when I set mine to emergency it routed me using the turn-arounds in the center of the express way.

I have a papermap of the truck routes for the whole state, and then a seperate one for county routes, and then a seperate one for the major cities in the area.. I have no idea how you would break it down for GPS use...

re: Truck Routes

Teletype makes GPS especially for truckers where the database has load limits, etc.

You can find them at Amazon, etc. They're kind of expensive though, but not too bad considering some have a 7" screen.

Just search for Teletype GPS at Amazon and you can get information on them.

Avoid No Truck Routes

Here is what happened on a trip... My Garmin sent me on a route that used narrow roads and was very difficult to drive in my motorhome. I want to start building and "Avoid" database similar to the "Avoid" ferrys. Does anyone think this is possible?

routes

anything is possible...or you could just wait for the new 465T to come out.

Fastest

I would think that the quickest/easiest way to try and guarantee a route that is truck friendly is simply to make sure your route preference is set to "fastest". This should keep you on most of the major, multi-lane roads.

Trucker gps

check out the new nuvi 465t. Press released Mar 18 available 2nd qtr 2009. Cost just $499

nuvi 465T

Bought it Love it except for 1 major flaw.

the Arrival time is in Local time for the location,
so If you are crossing Time Zones. Like I do it won't match your watch.
Truckers never change their watch we always remain in sync W our home domicile Time wise.

the settings are well thought out and easy to use.

have only had 1 week but love it already

Truck Route

What is the purpose of setting the vehicle to "Truck". Does it alter the route?

Of several things, it

Of several things, it changes the average speeds it uses to calculate ETA, it makes the route depend most heavily on Interstates and Major Highways, and it limits the use of smaller State roads and surface streets to a minimum in order to reach the final destination.

I don't know if it has the data base of STAA roads or not, or whether it knows about restricted roads. I think one of Garmin's newest models has low clearances, but I can't be sure.

There is only two good GPS for OTR Truckers at the present, Co-Pilot Trucker and PC Miler Navigator. http://www.dieselboss.com/

The PC Miler uses Rand Mcnally software and databases. They are the guys who make the difinitive Atlas for Truckers and has the most uptodate lists of approved truck routes, clearances and weight restrictions.

Yes, I know Garmin and several others are beginning to make GPS for truckers, but Co-Pilot and PC Miler have gotten one heck of a big head start. Co-Pilot has been around as a Trucker specific GPS for more than 10 years.
