nuMaps Lifetime Update

I purchased nuMaps Lifetime Update from Amazon (saved $20). I activated it on Garmin's web site and downloaded the update. That took about 1 hour. During the extraction phase, I got a message that the file was corrupted. Re-downloaded it (another hour) and used WinRar (Garmin's suggestion) to extract it. Again a message that the file is corrupted. I have wasted about 5 hours trying to update my Nuvi 750. I have tried Garmin's suggestions re disabling power management and my firewall but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions POI pals?

Corrupt Download

Are you downloading from the Amazon website or the Garmin website? Which ever site you are downloading from is the one one you will have to work with to resolve the issue.

PC or Mac? What browser are you using? Do you use any kind of download manager program?

Are you deleting?

Are you deleting the corrupted download before re-downloading? If not, try that.

I am downloading from Garmin

I am downloading from Garmin and yes I am deleting the previous corrupted download

I'm not a fan of 2GB single file downloads and certainly don't like doing them, but it's worked twice for me now.

The file you download and run on your computer is roughly 2,012,300 KB in size, right? (This may be slightly different since I downloaded the version available April 9 and I think it's been tweaked a couple times as needed for some newer nuvis--also, in the file properties, my true file size is 1.91 GB (2,060,594,772 bytes) and the "file size on disk" is 1.91 GB (2,060,595,200 bytes)).

The third time may be the charm for you. As you've already done, make sure the computer doesn't let its hard drive shut down or computer go to sleep during the download/installation. You may also want to consider disabling a screen saver and avoiding other activity on the computer during the download and installation--maybe including using a VOIP phone if you use one. Is the computer connected to the broadband modem by cable or by cable through a router, or is it wireless from a router? If wireless, you may want to try switching to a cabled connection--at least make sure a wireless connection is very good if that's what you're doing. You may also want to try doing the download during a time of your day when your ISP is less busy (and if you use a wireless router, there'll be less neighborhood router traffic potentially interfering with your router/computer signal)--in the wee AM hours. Other than that, having your ISP come out and check your signal quality and modem may be a last resort. Or finding a neighbor who's also got a lifetime subscription who can burn you a copy of the file onto DVD and let you run the installation from someone else's successful download--you will still need an active internet connection when installing from a DVD to validate that your GPS has a paid lifetime subscription.

One last observation: with most cable broadband connections, folks generally report roughly a 2-hr download time. Is your broadband connection a premium even-faster connection? If not, the download time seems a bit short making me wonder if part of the corrupted download may still be around and being added to--rather than starting from scratch--or that you're getting an incomplete download. From what you say, I doubt that this is the issue although your download time interval seems shorter than I expect. When you do the download, are your download speeds pretty constant and does the "progress bar" look normal going from 0 to 100%?

Big downloads

I sometimes have to download ISO images for my job and I have to agree with the points that CraigW made. One thing that I might add is to defrag your drive before starting the download so that it has a better chance of writing to the disk in a flow rather than the drive accessing pigeon holes to put the data in. Also kill any processes running in the task bar that aren't essential. I've had the best results starting the download really late at night and just going to bed to let it do its thing.

VOIP

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. As a matter of fact I do have VOIP and did do the download during the day.
I will try the download again at bedtime with the system tray empty, firewall and power management off.
I'll let you know if that works. Thanks again.

Are you getting a message like the original poster that your downloaded file was corrupt when starting to run it? Or are you getting some other error message or what appears to be a failure of the file to start running? If something other than a corruption error, let us know what the error message or other failure is and maybe someone can offer some help.

Any chance you are trying to

Any chance you are trying to save to a FAT16 partition? If so that's likely your problem as it's hitting the 2GB file size limit. If it's FAT32 or NTFS then you're OK file size wise.

i have the same problem. one garmen tech told me what happens is the virus protector i use writes a packet in the file and that corrupts the file. they suggest to dissable the virus protector. well i am a garmin fan but if they think i will dissable my virus protector for two hours they are out of their minds. my friend downloaded it fo me and he uses the free virus program, i think it is afg or something like that. i use norton and i do know that norton likes to take over the system, so i will try the afg next update. hope this helps.

corrupt file

I have free AVG antivirus running. I have reconnected my internet connection, bypassing VOIP and my router. The modem is now directly connected to the computer. I have disabled all unnecessary programs in the system tray. I disabled Windows firewall. I again downloaded the 2010 update (at least the 6th time) and extracted the file using WinRar (per Garmin's recommendation). This time I got to 99% done when the file CORRUPT came on. I have waited on 2 separate occasions 60 and 80 minutes on the phone for Garmin support before I had to hang up. I have emailed Garmin for support and they tell me to telephone them.
Any of you want to buy my 750 with nuMaps Lifetime? Lifetime traffic included and I'll give you my account login for free.

I called Garmin, spoke with a tech support guy who had to troubleshoot the issue on my pc remotely. I guess the reason for asking you to call is that they may have to similarly access your PC remotely This is the way I got it to work during that exercise (which was coupled with a call). I downloaded, as he suggested, 7zip from www.7-zip.org, and after installation I used 7zip to extract the file to a folder on the desktop. After extraction, 7zip gave the message that some of the files were corrupt but the main installation file was not affected. You can then install the Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010C file that is extracted. I hope this works. I noticed that the garmin file was created with 7zip and you would see "Igor Pavlov" under the file (which is from 7zip).
Prior to this call to Garmin, I had downloaded the lifetime update several times. After that laborious exercise, I saved it on a disk, which I have had to use when I had to reinstall it.

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After days of frustration and not sure what to do next, I tried a longshot. I reconnected my home network. I then downloaded the file to my LAPTOP using a WIRELESS CONNECTION. I extracted the file using the standard "Launch" command. To my absolute amazement it worked.

Good luck to those of you with similar problems and thanks POI pals for your responses.

That's great news. Now you're set for the upcoming 4x/yr upgrades! Oh joy.

Did you use a different OS?

Did you use a different OS? What differences in programs were there between the two?

Time vs Investment

Makes you wonder if all the time and frustration is worth the savings. Guess each person has to evaluate that for themselves.

Just did this myself

Actually I'm still doing it...

I've got a fairly high-end laptop (Rated 5.9 by MS) and after the 1.91Gb DLed, I rebooted my PC and then ran the .exe.

It took over 10 minutes before it prompted me to accept the licence agreement, then another 20 minutes for it to update my Mapsource, and now I'm at an hour 20 and counting at "78% loaded" on my 760...

I can see if I was impatient I would have rebooted my PC before it even really got started...

Garmin needs to create/use a better installer LOL

Luckily I haven't run into any problems with the install, besides for the huge lag in it starting up...

Here's hoping that everyone's goes as smoothly!

The real slowdown is the USB

The real slowdown is the USB cord and the 1.1 protocol. You are moving close to 2gb of data across it plus overhead of talking back and forth.

Fiel is corrupt during extraction phase

Easiest way to get around this is to call Garmin, wait on hold for 45 minutes and ask them to send you the disc with the program on it.

None of their trouble shooting seems to work.

I was running Windows XP...not sure if Vista would have been any better.
