POIs on SD card vs. directly on Nuvi

I have TWO PROBLEM ISSUES with POIs.

1. What are the pros / cons of putting Custom POIs directly on the Nuvi versus on an SD card? question

I have an 855 and am brand new to using Custom POIs. I have looked through various POI FAQs here, but haven't seen any discussions regarding the above question, or the following issue.

2. I pose this ADDITIONAL Issue:

I AM able to install the McDonalds and Rest Stop POIs direct to my 855, but the file for KFC does NOT show up in Extras>Custom POIs (despite all three files existing in the same folder on my PC); McD and Rest Stops install properly. However, my attempt to get KFCs onto the Nuvi has failed twice.

After failing to get them all on the Nuvi, I finally got KFC onto a micro SD card, which is read by the Nuvi. [I am amazed that all three categories show up in Extras>Custom POIs, and that each list instaneously appears, when clicked.]

However, my issue is that each time I power on the 855, it presents this window message:
"New Extras data found on card. Would you like to install this data.....?"

My problem is I do NOT want to encounter this message EVERY time I power on. I fear that I will eventually make a mistake and answer the above message with a YES: When I answered YES the first time today, it did install the KFC file to the Nuvi, but the McD and Rest Stops were gone! mad

It seems as if I cannot get all three files onto the Nuvi. Am I doing something wrong?

Should I instead install all three files to the micro-SD card? question If so, should I expect to install all additional POIs onto the SD card?

Want to shut stop that annoying message? Here's how.

Answer the question at the prompt with a YES and you'll get another screen where you can select "don't ask again" and get an opportunity you "skip" individual files so you get to choose what does and doesn't get transferred.

Sorry but I don't recal the exact verbiage.

No big deal if you unstall them on your GPS by accident you can just delete the poi.gpi file from the GPS and they will be removed.

If the KFC file doesn't show

If the KFC file doesn't show after using POILoader and telling it the target is the unit, you may be out of space. Hook the unit up to the computer and see how much memory is available.

As to deleting the existing POI file from the main unit, I suggest using POILoader to again do that.

When you install POI, you need to install all of them at the same time. While there are some tricks you can use to prevent this, everytime you run POILoader it overwrites the old POI.GPI file. So you can't just add another file to the existing one, you need to load them all at the same time.

Put all of them on the SD

I put all my files on the SD card and let the GPS install them to the unit when prompted, this allows the use of the poi's if the sd card is removed or has a problem. If you put them all on the sd card it will install all of them, but if you install some to to the GPS and some to the sd card it will wipe out the ones on the GPS when it installs the ones on the card.

SD Card

I install them on the SD card only. I disabled the message about installing them onto the GPS, and have never had an issue with accessing the files. My reasoning (valid or not) is that I can keep the unit "cleaner" and have all the poi's I installed on the card.

internal / SD

I only have the redlight camera file loaded internally, everything else is on an SD card.

There have been posts in the past, that claim that internal files may be processed / accessed faster.
I can't see much difference either way. However, I continue to keep the RLC file internally, and all else on a SD card.

........Garmin StreetPilot c550 / Nüvi 765...........

Its on the card

I put everything on the 8gb SD card.

Kevin - Nuvi 57LMT - Software: 4.40 - Map: Lower 49 States 2017.20

Finally put all Custom POIs on Card

Sorry for not getting back here before this.

I'm the original poster...and have placed all Custom POIs on the SD card. I just didn't see any value in splitting them between the Nuvi and the card.

Add on Memory Cards

I add all my POI's (& mp3's) to a 16 GB SDHC card.

That way, it's easy to trasfer them to other similar units & add/remove mp3's directly on the PC rather than thru the slow link to the Garmin.

Everything Extra to the SD Card

I keep topo maps, jpegs, and POI's on the SD card. I have different POI's in separate folders. This way I can have different alert distances for each type.

I keep mine on a SD card,

I keep mine on a SD card, have inadvertently installed them on the nuvi and I can't say I noticed a difference.
