I own a Maestro 4250 and am very pleased with the unit. Except for one thing, when the unit is turned on it takes a while for it to display exactly where I am. It is stuck at my original location for about 1 to 2 miles of driving. Is there anyway to avoid this, or anyway to improve the reaction? I realize I could turn the unit on a few minutes before leaving.

Turn the unit on before driving. The units remember the last place they were and the approximate positions of the satellites so they can recover and update the location information. If you start driving before the unit syncs, then the unit starts over from scratch and has to download all the information from the satellites instead of just updating.

I also turn mine on before driving and it gets a fix almost immediately.

if you roll without a fix
If you roll without a fix, it will take longer to get one, your Maestro is not alone with this, Garmin's will to do the same just like the rest of them. It's just the nature of the beast and GPSr technology.

The long boot up time of GPS
The long boot up time of GPS chip is known for many years. It have been improved over the years, but still take considerable time. Bad reception (such as inside parking structure) also make it worse.
