750 Won't load POI's from SD card

I attempted to dwnld a set of POI files to my friends 750. It would not recognize the SD card. Is there some magic word to use so that the unit can load the addition POI's? neutral

First create a folder named

First create a folder named something such as "MY_POI_Files" on your PC.

Next download the POI files from the site which may be in csv or gpx format and place them in that folder.

Download the newest version of Garmins POI Loader.

Connect your 750 to the computer via the USB cable and find the card's drive letter. Normally the unit will be say for instance F: and the card would be "G:"

Run POI Loader and point it to the card's drive letter. After it has finished. Unplug the GPSr properly and then turn it on and goto "Where to"/Extras and look for your Custom POI's there.

Note: the unit will bring up a message saying it has found the files on the sd card and do you want to load them to the unit. Say "NO" and on the next screen "Skip" and then you won't see that message any longer.

Did you use POI Loader?

I assume from what you wrote that you want to put the POIs on a SD card, then give the card to your nuvi 750 friend so he/she can put the card into the nuvi 750 and have the POIs available.

Did you simply copy the POI files to a SD card or did you use POILoader to install the POIs to the SD card? It should work with POILoader.

When using POILoader with the SD card, consider the SD card a "Garmin Device," then POILoader will find it. This works even if you don't have the GPS available to you as it just uses the computer's SD card media port with an installed SD card. POILoader then converts the POIs to a single file (poi.gpi) which it will place in the SD card putting the file in the card's /garmin/poi subdirectory, which it will create if the card doesn't already have those subdirectories. Done this way, a nuvi 750 should recognize the POIs you've loaded for your friend.

Good luck. Shout if it doens't work or if my assumptions are wrong.

Reading POI's off an SD Card on a nuvi 750

I appreciate the instructions. They are ones that I have followed 100's of times for my own unit; a c550. I've written my own POI's using .csv files and loaded them with no problem. Ronnie's nuvi 750 did not acknowledge SD card insertion at all like my unit does. I checked the SD card and it's OK. I used it again in my unit without any problems. I think its his unit and not the card or the files. I did not have time to take his unit and connect directly to the PC/Laptop to load the files. In any event, I appreciate the response. He's a newbie at GPS and has only "plugged and played" thus far. We'll get him squared away before too long.

POI's and SD card with nuvi 750

The SD card is good to go. I am ahead of the curve with my Garmin and POI files but his unit tossed me a curve. I didn't have the time to work with it. Another oddity was soon after I attempted to load the POI's, the maps were lost. The screen would display the vehicle and nothing else. He was on his way to Florida and was gone a little while. He turned around and came back so I could check the unit. I couldn't recall the maps at all. He had to hit the road so he left with the unit as blank as our faces about what had happened to it. A little while later he called and told me the maps magically appeared and all was right in GPS land. I think his unit might be a bit vexed. Don't know. Thanx for the hep (as we say in hillbilly country).

Whoops

Whoops, sorry about that. I should have realized with your POI Contributor badge that you weren't a newbie.

Good luck to your friend. I suppose that before suggesting a return of the unit to Garmin that maybe a hard reset of the 750 might be worth a try to see if it can then see the SD card--or maybe try a different SD card (even though the current card works in your GPS). Odds are that a Garmin exchange may be in the works for your friend.

POI Loader and SD Card

Not sure, but I think the POI's must be installed on the SD card while in the correct GPS unit. If not mistaken, the program on the GPS will be updated to reflect where the EXTRA POI's are located. I have a 750 and maybe can check it out later by removing the POI's I have installed, putting them on the SD Card, then seeing if the 750 will recognize them.

The nuvi reads the POIs and builds their categories when the SD card is inserted. I've used the same POIs on a card with a 255W, 650, 680 and 760.

Thanks, WAASup. I stand corrected. Without testing the idea, I made an assumption that part of the operating system would be changed to indicate where the POI's are located, you know, like a computer program that doesn't know where your file is until you tell it.

You learn something new everyday, then die and forget everything (I think).

Thanks again.
