Confused. Are Csv and Gpx the same? If not how do I upload each to my GPS? I have a Garmin c340. Thanks....

You can use either gpx or

You can use either gpx or csv files for your unit. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6203 .To load custom pois for your unit the easiest way is

1.Make a folder on your computer and give it a name. Example My poi's.
2.Download the csv or gpx file and put them in that folder.
3.If you want to add a bmp . Download from site and also add to the same folder but make sure you name them the same as the file you want them to go with except the extensions.

>My pois=Main Folder
>>Dunkin Donuts.csv
>>Dunkin Donuts.bmp
>>Walmart.csv
>>Walmart.bmp

4.Hook the gps up to computer using usb cable and then run poiloader http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ . Select My pois folder.
5.If you want alerts use manual mode instead of express.
6.You should get message so many pois are loaded at the end of the download.
7.On GPS go to where to then extras and touch custom pois and you should see them.
8.Every time you run poiloader it will overwrite the existing files.

Later on you may want to add subfolders for more organization.

Edit. You only have 2mb for loading custom pois.So you need to conserve your space.Sd card is use only for additional maps and can not be used for custom pois.

.

Gpx files will generally have more data in them than csv files. Mapsource's default output is the gpx file. and can contain other information than coordinate and address information, such as notes, embedded pictures & sounds, elevation, etc.

Adding an Alert to a built-in occurance

I'm new here, and I'm not sure I've worded my question correctly. You people have cleared up quite a bit of my confusion (GPX vs. CSV), but I'd like to add a custom alert to my GPS for when I get home. I like the Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, the one that I got off of here, but don't know how to correctly place this into my GPS. I'm assuming we don't edit the software already loaded into our GPS, but it, of course, has a built in "home" event, tied to the TTS person selected. Any help, or link to the answer, would be appreciated. I've read a bunch, but still don't believe I know how to do this one (this thread has cleared up the "alert" function on add-on POIs for me though)

One suggestion would be go

One suggestion would be go to http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and download the program if you don't already have it.Click on add new poi and fill in the information.I am using Home as the example for the name.Make sure to go down to Tourguide info.Put in proximity the number of feet you want the alert for.Click ok when finished.Save as a gpx file. This file will now load with the alert built in.Take the voice alert you have Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.It is in the mp3 format correct? Now just like you do with other mp3 alert put it with the custom poi you want it for.Example.As long as you name the gpx file and the alert the same name except the extensions.

>My pois=Main Folder
>>Dunkin Donuts.csv
>>Dunkin Donuts.bmp
>>Walmart.csv
>>Walmart.bmp
>>Home.gpx
>>Home.mp3

Favorites vs POIs

The Home feature that is built into the GPS is a Favorite and you cannot create custom audio alerts (as mp3's or wav's) for Favorites. If you decide to use a POI instead of the Favorite, you will forfeit the ease of choosing Home from the WhereTo menu.

the answer

Right you are, I can see that but I think what Charles45 is saying is to create a POI, and have an alert go off when you are within so many feet of your home GPS coordinates is all. At least that is what I think it is. I'll need to give it a try. I'm reasonably sure you can't modify what comes with the GPS, only do additions. My TTS voice tells me I'm home when I start turning into the driveway. I actually travel another 60 feet or so, then go into a garage. Perhaps I could get this small POI to trigger the "home" mp3 after I've gone up the drive....

Yank51 - I use a custom POI

I use a custom POI for this function. My "home" is an intersection about a 1/4 mile away from the entrance to our development. My drive is a custom POI called - appropriately - OZ with an alert distance of 50 feet. Dorthy tells me "There's no place like home" just before I turn in.

yank51 .That was what I suggested a custom poi file for it. When you use Extra Poi Editor you can move the marker for the coordinates to get it more tuned to what you want.
