HELP MsnDirect LOCAL EVENTS feature not working...
16 years
|
Hello everyone im new with gps systems but i finally bought my first one a couple days ago (GARMIN NUVI 780). i recently activated the msn direct trial but i have one big issue. The local events feature says there are no local events nearby and it needs a couple of hours to gather the data... i have tried calling customer support and they have resent the signal. My software is updated but i dont know whats going on... all of my other features seem to be working fine except for the locacl events wich tell me to wait some hours...
i would really appreciate if somebody helped me fix this issue. My gps is hookd up under teh dashboard so i didint have to plug it in the cigarrete lighter with all the messy cables. so i cant reset teh reciever. i dont think its necesarry but i hope someone can help me fix this problem.
thank you everyone in advance
hmmmm . . . .
Are there any local events for your area?
There are none in mine, but I know the feature works because I've seen them in my travels.
Currently have: SP3, GPSMAP 276c, Nuvi 760T, Nuvi 3790LMT, Zumo 660T

Everything has always worked on my Nuvi 760. You might want to try and delete the data files that would be in this folder on the nuvi. The folder is called "ddb" It is found "garmin\poi\ddb". Make sure you backup the info always. It might take several minutes for the msn data to be return. These are the names that appear in my folder.
H:\Garmin\Poi\ddb\data_source.ddb
H:\Garmin\Poi\ddb\news.ddb
H:\Garmin\Poi\ddb\stocks.ddb
H:\Garmin\Poi\ddb\stocks_symbols.ddb

It does take quite awhile
It does take quite awhile for that particular feature to work. After it says nothing in the area and it needs a couple of hours, clear that message and try again. Sometimes then I do get info. I get info from a couple of hundred miles away also even if there is nothing close to me.
Really Dissapointed with Garmin...
This was my first gps and i just had heard so many good things tahta i really wanted one.
But it has just caused me problems... i wish they can be solved and the gps lives up to its expectation
I left the gps unit on alnight with it pluggeed into the msn reciever and today its still saying no locacl events nearby and to please wait a couple of hours...
what are some ways i could fix this...
PS. if i delete those files will it work? and what am i doing exactly im afraid i delet soemthing important and my gps turns into a rock....
May be Poor Signal Strength
Try selecting MSN Live, then Status. You should see a signal meter in the top right. If you don't have two or three bars, you may not be receiving updates. Also, try installing Garmin's WebUpdater and making sure that you install the latest MSNLive software.
Jen
i have teh latest msnlive
i have teh latest msnlive software and i have good signal.... still cant find the problem
i have just tried discoencting/connecting the car battery to see if it resets it.. hope it works
Disconnecting the car battery won't work . . .
. . . because the MSN DIrect receiver has a built-in battery of it's own.
Are you certain there's local content in your area? There's none in mine.

Sigh...
bramfrank,
you were right disconecting the car battery did NOT work, i did it because someoen suggested it to me.
I live in Chula Vista/San Diego i am almost ceirtan there has to be some local events... since im new using this msn direct i have no idea what kind of events it looks for.
what il do twomorrow is drive to get an oil change and try from different locations... but does anyone have a solution for a problem like this?
would really appreciate any help..
There probably just aren't any local events
If you are getting gas prices and traffic data, you know that your MSN receiver is working. If you are not getting local events, I would conclude that none have been reported.
Agreed
If you're receiving all other MSN features except for the Local Events, there's likely something wrong with MSN in your area and that feature is not being transmitted for some reason. Nothing is wrong with your receiver.

UNDER THE DASHBOARD?
Omar:
I see that you connected it under the dashboard, the receiver is the antenna and perhaps it is not receiving a full signal because it is blocked "under the dashboard"???
yea i been asking around
yea i been asking around different places too and it appears MSNDIRECT locacl events has been out for about 4 days now... in many parts of California and Florida... guess il call to just ask how much longer!
and FRGG,
I mean whats under teh dashboard is the conections that would regularly go on the cigarrete lighter.
My device sits on my windshield on the far left
Thanks everyone tough i found everyoens advice/suggestions very helpfull
I think what FRGG is getting at...
...is that while your GPS unit itself is sitting up where it can get a signal, perhaps the MSN receiver which is part of the power plug, is in a position that is limiting it's signal

If MSN Direct data is being received by the unit as the OP said, the system on his end is fine. If multiple features are being updated with data like traffic, news, weather, etc, this shows the system is operating normally. If this is the case and only one of the features (Local Events) is not being updated, then it's safe to say the error is with MSN. If the OP were getting NO data to ANY of the features, that's the sign of reception issues or a unit reset/activation signal resend is in order.
I have personally had issues with Local Events not having any data for the past week. All other features are being updated normally.

Local events not working (Read Below!!)
Omar, I have a 780 I just bought and had the same issue. I called MSN and they reset my unit and went through the same rigamaroll. I called MSN back again and spoke to a supervisor and found out that local events has been down for almost 3 weeks for the whole U.S. I asked the supervisor why their own reps would not know this and he stated that some of the reps were never informed (Ridiculous). They have no eta at this time for local events to be restored.
.
Thanks for verifying with MSN that the problem is on their end. It's what I suspected all along.
