Nuvi 200 proximity alert works too well

I have the Starbucks file loaded and it is working. I can't figure out why it Will alert "You are approaching Starbucks" at least 3 times. This is as I drive by a place that is adjacent to the road I frequently drive. It's not just approach , nearby and leaving as I keep driving. I have all my proxmity distances set at 1320 feet. On the other hand with a different file Diner's Drive Ins and Dives, it will not alert until I physically drive into the parking lot of 1 place by my house, and then will alert at least 3 times with another place in town.

Does anyone else notice too much or uneven alerting?

This is usually caused by the coordinates being too far from the street. If you are talking about Grandpa's Bakery, it would appear that the coordinates were placed at the door of the bakery instead of the entrance to the parking lot or the intersection, perhaps 75 ft from Federal Hwy. Also, when a POI is at an intersection, it can depend on the street from which you approach. It only alerts when you approach via a street within 50 ft of the coordinates. When you enter the parking lot, the unit finally quits snapping your vehicle to the street, and sees you as being within 50 ft.

The gps is a computer and if it reacts differently, it is for a reason -- most likely placement of the coordinates.

Same Issue

I have always gotten the same "multiple" audio alerts the OP describes. With the highway rest area combined file, it got particularly annoying. I tried reducing my alert distance from 2 miles to only 1 mile, but still get multiple audio alerts. But, not as many and not for as long.

I have found no setting in the 660 that will change this behavior. My wife really started complaining, "I heard you, already!"

I have also not found any setting in POI Loader that will affect it. It does it whether the audio file is an .mp3 or a .wav format. It just appears that, this is the way the Garmin operates.

Very odd

Very odd. With my nuvi 750 and a 15000' alert distance, I get just one alert (or sometimes two, one for the rest area on the other side of the road.) The blue banner visual alert remains until I pass the rest area but I only get the one audible alert.

Is there a difference between nuvi models, I wonder.

I also

I also get one alert per individual Rest Area with my Nuvi 260.

On Speed Traps I get multiple alerts if I am over the speed I put in the name column.

Sometimes, on several TourGuides I use, I will get a 2nd or 3rd alert if I have to stop my car before I am out of the area.

Same here on my 265.One

Same here on my 265.One alert for the rest stop.I have it set for single tone and the distance at 8000 ft.Seen other users reporting continuous alerts. There must be a difference in some units. The Streetpilot 304 I use to own would do a continuous alert and it did get annoying.

an alternate potential source of the problem

Gary A wrote:

.. With the highway rest area combined file.. but still get multiple audio alerts...

On a recent trip, I found that I was getting alerts with this file from rest areas on each side of the highway, so I would get one for a rest area on my side and another on the other side of the divided highway. I also sometimes got a single alert when there was a rest area on the other side but none on my side.

Before trying to adjust the proximity you might want to be sure that you are getting multiple alerts for the same rest area and not for a rest area on the other side of the highway. You might end up adjusting the proximity so tightly that you would not have time to exit safely, and still get multiple alerts.

Multiple, Repeating, Numerious, Annoying Audio Alerts

Yes, depending on the distance across the highway (width of the median), I will also pick up some alerts from rest areas in the opposite direction, which makes the multiple audio alerts behavior even more annoying.

In the areas where I have driven, I have not gone past a rest area in the median, shared by both traveling directions, so I don't know how it would behave there. I remember these were typical on the New Jersey Turnpike, for example.

With the alert distance set to 2 miles, I would get 3 or 4 audio alerts for the rest area in my traveling direction and (depending) 1 or 2 for the sister rest area in the opposite direction.

Changing the alert distance to 1 mile reduced the audio alerts to 2 or 3 and 1 or 2, respectively.

About all I gained was now I only have to listen to it repeat for the time it takes to travel 1 mile instead of 2 miles.

Changing the tone setting from Single to Continuous and back, had no effect. I already tried that.

Maybe this is something Garmin changed in later models, but its how my 660 has behaved since day one.

When I start getting

When I start getting annoying alerts, I select volume>mute until I'm past. Works for me.

I used audible alerts for one day. Then the novelty wore off and I deleted them all.

Same here

I get the same results as CraigW on my 750; one, sometimes two alerts if there is another on the other side of the highway.

The current version of the combined rest area file is "L". If simply copied into one's POI folder, there could likely be an "I", "J", or "K" version left over in there also. That could be a reason someone could be getting multiple alerts; wouldn't each copy trigger an alert? If so, this could apply to other files if there were multiple copies with slightly different names, or a even a .csv along with a .gpx version. POI loader doesn't care, it just rolls them up in a ball and stuffs it into the nüvi.

Delete Previous Version

I always delete the previous version first to ensure that doesn't happen. I do that for all the files when I get updates - Rest Area, Walmart, etc. Its just a habit I've gotten into to avoid duplications.

Agree Completely!!

GadgetGuy2008 wrote:

Same here. In fact, the highway rest area file is the ONLY one I have loaded with an audio alert file. Like GadgetGuy, it was cute at first, just because the Garmin would do it, but it quickly became nerve racking.

I do use the mp3 player to listen to music. Between the turn-by-turn directions and the multiple, repeating custom audio alerts, the music was constantly being interrupted. It just got to be too much. Plus, it was almost impossible to carry on a conversation with anyone else in the car - (I play the 660 through the car's stereo using a cassette adapter so its easily heard and can overpower a passenger trying to speak).

thanks

Thank you all for the advise. I will try 15000 on the rest areas, and be sure to delete all POI files before loading updates , which I have never tried. I will also use the mute more often.

alerts

On a recent trip to Cleveland,My hotel was near an olive garden. This restraunt is one of my poi locations. Every time I left the hotel lot I heard " appraching olive garden" three times. It drove the people with me crazy. I liked knowing my alerts were working!!

Maintaining a single version

When I download POI files, I download them into a directory that contains the relevant files and overwrite the old file with the new one, thereby preserving the link to related BMP and MP3 files.
