Garmin City Navigator NA NT Update 2010.10

Greetings.
A friend of mine just bought a NUVI 7xx series. When I took a look at it, it was running the NT 2009 maps. Upon registering at Garmin's site, we were able to download the 2010.10 update! It is almost a 2gb file and takes a while to download, install and update the gps. The resulting installed package can be used (with a key from Garmin) to update additional GPSes or datacards.

FYI, the changes in the DC area are not completely reflected in the new maps, but they are better than the 2009 edition.

NavTeq is usually a few

NavTeq is usually a few years behind in updating the maps to actually show the present status.. I have as well as others have reported to NavTeq errors in their maps and usually takes sometime for them to get it right.

Yep! and I thank that the Navteq Map Reporter account is useless. There is no feedback or anything. It gives one the feeling that our error reporting efforts are in vain go into the cyber black hole.

Yeah, maybe. But the newest restaurants in Old Town are actually listed now, which is cool.

There is tons of stuff

There is tons of stuff missing in the Seattle area. I went to a newish building (built 2 years ago) and it sent me down the wrong street as it was guessing where it was.

I didn't try mine out with the old maps for more than a day so I have no idea how much of an improvement it is over the past release.

Today's the day to upload

I received my free CD of 2010 upgrade and figured that Saturday would be a good day to upgrade the Nuvi 855. Well the program is asking for a "product key" and I don't have one. I searched the package that the disc came in and nothing. Garmin "help" is closed until Monday. Any ideas where this product key should be because it's not on the CD floder flap.

TIA,

Jim

The last time I did a DVD upgrade, which was for the 2009 map update, the DVD came in a standard CD/DVD jewel case. On the back of my case was a very large, very bright green sticker that said "Important: Please retain for your records. Your product key is xxxxxxxx." I would have thought that things would be the same for 2010 DVD upgrades, but it's hard to imagine your not seeing something this big and bright. Without the product key, you will not be able to install the map on your computer and GPS, so you probably will need to wait until Monday and call Garmin.

Just to be sure, have you checked all the paperwork, the DVD itself, and the DVD case's front, back and inside? It's hard to imagine that a Garmin-mailed DVD upgrade would be mailed without a product key.

Good luck.

Check your "my Garmin" account

Check your "my Garmin" account on the Garmin Website to see if they have the new 2010 map update listed and that is where the product key will be shown.

I looked at Garmin on line at my account and there it was--my "Product Key".

"And now the rest of the story"--Last week I started to download the update but when I found out that it would take 21+ hours with my slow DSL I opted for a CD. Prehaps they firgured I would be smart enough to look at my account and use the same "product key". Well I wasn't--at least not without help. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good for you. Have an enjoyable next 1-2 hours installing it. I'll remember the tip. myGarmin does have a lot of info for us.

Why so slow Garmin?

Garmin has a web location to view maps. Before buying I have looked at this map and found no updates in my area, so, I thought I would wait until I saw the updates for my location were included.

Last week I was drivng in in a friends car and he told me he updated to 2009 version. To my surprise the map included all the information I have been waiting for. Checked again with the map on Garmin's site and it would seem they are still using the 2008 map under the 2009 heading.

This seems to me to be very poor marketing on Garmin's part. I would have upgraded long ago if they kept their recent release on their web site to view. I am sure others would do the same thing.

Murfreesboro, TN

Was through there on Tuesday and Friday passing through and there is a new mega shopping center and would you know that stuff is there on the 2010.10 map set. My wife was in downtown Atlanta, GA and was in the new Atlantic Station area and all the streets showed up there as well.

Navteq Map Reporter

I've been reporting (And getting a response) the location of my house to them for years. However, it has never been corrected.

When you look up my address, it places you about 4 houses down the street instead of on the corner where the house actually is located.

I agree that when the streets were laid out wierd on this one street compared to all the others in the neighborhood, but you would think that over years they would correct it.

There are many other public places that provide exact coordinates to the house, just not Navteq.

It won't get fixed

Your problem won't get fixed. Addresses are located according to the range of addresses in the block. If there are 20 addresses, and the starting number is 1, and the last number is 20, then address number 4, even if it is the first house will be located 2tenths of the total length of the block from the corner. If it is #20 and it's the only house on the block it will be located at the other end of the block on the corner. Even if it's in the middle of the block.

Only where the addresses have been assigned by 911, and use the mileage format, will addresses be reasonably close.

Street addresses are a

Street addresses are a common item many people don't understand. Phranc is exactly correct. The map companies will never "Fix" your location because for all purposes it is not broken.
Think of this way. If you have a 3 acre lot, there is no way to know where your driveway or house is located on that lot. The map takes an average based on distance per lot. It does not take into account back lots for instance either...

I reported an error to NavTeq in my area in 2007. In 2008 (almost a full year later), I received an automated email from them saying the mapping error I reported was corrected and will be included in future NavTeq updates. It did not make it to the 2009 Garmin update. I don't have the 2010 update to check.

how much is that?
