route loop

I'm trying to create some tour loops and haven't seen any info on this here on the website. Specifically, I want to create a route with a series of destinations that end back at the "start" point. Ideally, once I created one of these files, the user could go to the nearest destination, and then follow the route in the defined order. Any suggestions on how to do this would be appreciated.

Are you planning

Are you planning on a circular route of say 10 stops where you can join the tour at any point and then cycle through to the rest in order? The units aren't that smart.

Waypoints

You'd create a route consisting up to 10 destinations and then custumize your desired route using waypoints in Google Maps.

Waypoints

If I read your reply correctly, there's a limit of (10)destinations. Are these the same as waypoints, or can I have more than (10) waypoints?

Waypoints

Google My Maps allow up to 20 waypoints, I believe.

Then you must use TakItWithe.com to convert and transfer them to your nuvi.

Nothing magical about the number 10

I just pulled the number out of the air to make a point. Many units allow a maximum of 10 different routes, but routes can have an almost unlimited number of waypoints. If you are still trying to build a circular route that would take a person from any point on the route through all the stops these units will not do that. Routes have a start and an end and they are not circular so you can't go from the end of the route to the start automatically. Like I said before, they aren't that smart.

new website called:

routeloops.com

I found this site this week. Kind of interesting and it seems geared toward bicyclists, but does have a car/motorcycle setting and a walking setting.

You select a point and it creates a loop that starts and ends at the same location, effectively creating a loop. You tell it how long you want the trip to be (in miles) and it does its best to come up with a trip. If you don't like the first trip, you can hit the button again and it will create another for you.

It does successfully export to Garmin and I believe other devices. I've been able to import into Basecamp and then send to device.

Problems I've encountered:

The number of waypoints it creates can be HUGE. The Garmin sometimes comes back and says it has to split the loop into two or three pieces.

For whatever reason, you can't edit the route it creates in Basecamp apart from deleting waypoints. It won't permit you to add more waypoints.

I do seem to be able to edit the route once it's loaded onto the device. So, I might add Home as my start and end point. That does work.

It adds MANY new waypoints to the collection in Basecamp sad

What is max number of waypoints in a route??

I've read some different things. Wondering what this limit is now on these newer devices??

My 3597 is breaking my route into separate trips and I'm nowhere near the limit, I believe.

Route

With my 2797 for my annual drive into Mexico I have to do that in 2 parts. It will not do it as one, I guess it may be since I add as many as 25 different waypoints to make the complete route.

Strangely enough the built into my car Garmin based GPS lets me do the complete route, but it takes as long as 1 1/2 hours to program it for that.

I wish there were a way to make the route reverse without having to do the same all over. But I realize that sometimes there are highway/road deviations.

1.) from Detroit to Laredo
2.) from Laredo to Manzanillo,Mx

the problem with routloop

is that it might generate 50 waypoints for a 10 mile course. I generated a 50 mile loop and the nuvi wanted to break that into 3 separate trips!

Basecamp can invert the route but the problem does come up with interstate highways as you mention.

Route loop

I forgot that just very recently I did just that when I did a tour covering several different locations for sightseeing and overnight stops. Total distance 2,100 km or 1,300 miles
Started from home and of course ended up at home.
Did all the necessary route layout using MapSource (Yeah I'm old)and then transferred all the waypoints to my old Nuvi 855.

No breaking it up into different sections such as my real long annual trip.
