Rochester, NY - know any locations yet?

Looked up online that the speed cameras and red light cameras, approved for Rochester, NY, in early April, were supposed to start being installed right after that approval.

Anyone know of any of the locations?

Thanks!

Update

The County voted down the red light cameras but the city of Rochester wants to continue with the installation of the red light cameras at the intersections that are not owned by the county. That is about 40 cameras out of 50 that will not be installed yet.

Have Confidence, Rochester!

Here in Nassau County, NY, Long Island, we have been dealing with the red light cameras for about a year. It hasn't been bad. At first, the county published all the locations on their website, but no longer. We are now spotting them and reporting the coordinates to Miss Poi. The Red Light Camera file has been flawless.

The law passed by the state legislature to allow cameras in Nassau is the same as the one allowing them in Rochester. It is a pilot project, and there is a limit to the number of locations. I don't remember that speed cameras were included anywhere in NY State - only red light cameras.

The people here were blindsided by the fact that right-on-red is included in a red light camera. Here, and probably there, every red light camera is a full-motion video camera with a wireless link to the RLC vendor.

Going straight through a red light camera is a clear-cut violation, but going one foot over the stop line and stopping there is less clear-cut. (you get a summons)

Right-on-red is even less clear-cut. You must make a dead stop before the stop line, and signal before proceeding. The vendor reviews the whole thing on video and they are looking for the letter of the law. Needless to say, most violations are right-on-red for minor violations. The fine is the same as blowing straight through a red light at 60 mph.

Hopefully the city will not reduce the timing of yellow lights.

As most here know, I am inclined toward Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE). However, it seems to me that running the red light and rolling right turns are violations that do not warrant the same fine. I think about how a police office might give a ticket for blowing through the light and a warning for the rolling right.

I think there might be merit in discussing with public officials how they might establish different fines based on the safety aspects related to each kind of violation. Whether they realize it or not, public officials should want the public behind ATE and a policy of the punishment fitting the crime would go a long way toward softening the opposition.

I am assuming that even the most ardent opponents of ATE would agree with this but I may be wrong. When the comment is made that ATE is another example of government taking away our "freedoms", I doubt anything will change that mind.

there is a difference

From my understanding, the summons or "ticket" generated from a camera is a civil offense. The ticket issued by a law enforcement official is a criminal offense. It would be wise to check the differences between the two before suggesting a blanket change. I believe it was you that brought up the law of unintended consequence.

I think most are civil

In Tennessee, I am sure that Automated Traffic Enforcement tickets are civil.

I think that most (but not all) traffic violations issued by a police officer are also civil.

From Wikipedia

"In the United States, most traffic laws are codified in a variety of state, county and municipal ordinances, with most minor violations classified as civil infractions. Although what constitutes a "minor violation" varies, examples include: non-moving violations; defective or unauthorized vehicle equipment; seat belt and child-restraint safety violations; and insufficient proof of license, insurance or registration. A trend in the late 1970s and early 1980s also saw an increased tendency for jurisdictions to re-classify certain speeding violations as civil infractions.[2] In contrast, for more "serious" violations, traffic violators may be held criminally liable, guilty of a misdemeanor or even a felony. Serious violations tend to involve multiple prior offenses; willful disregard of public safety; death, serious bodily injury or damage to property."

However, you are quite correct that I should have checked this out before leaving myself open to the law of unintended consewuences.

They were late in getting everything done. The cameras have been active for 1 week. There is 1 more week of grace period. Your picture will be taken on Nov 8th.

The way I see it is that all red light cameras will initially generate revenue from those that do not obey the law. As everyone becomes familiar where they are and starts driving correctly, then I foresee the revenue will go down. There will still be the unsuspecting that will get caught though.

2 more cameras

2 more cameras went live today July 31st 2011 at 6am. They are now giving no warning. I caught the release in the paper the day before. That brings the total to 12 cameras.

The locations are:
State St and Allen St
-77.615426,43.158424

Goodman St and Interstate 490. The problem here is that it could be placed at Goodman and the westbound exit to I490 OR Goodman and the eastbound exit to I490. I will give the coordinates for the center of the bridge as it goes over I490 till I get a chance to confirm.

More cameras

When I look at the Red Light & Speed Cameras webpage it shows Rochester, NY as having 16 cameras. I just looked at the city website and they have 20 cameras listed. Is the database missing some locations?

JM hasn't updated that

There are 20 cameras in Rochester NY. I have been updating JM as I hear about them. I just verified the file and all 20 are there. The funny thing is, the news is very quiet about it. There is no warning, just a newspaper bleep the day before.
