Custom POI proximity alerts

I have used a Tomtom addin for my Palm phone for years and it would "warn" me whenever I was within a specific distance of a designated POI type. I recently upgraded to a Garmin 760 an am trying to get it to do the same. I have set up several custom POIs and manually loaded them onto the Garmin along with a proxmity alert distance. I just discovered that my new Garmin doesn't seem to alert me if the POI is not directly on my route. For example if I am on a freeway and the POI is a short distance down an exit highway, it doesn't alert me. If the POI is physically on my route, I get an alert when I approach within the alert distance. Can someone let me know if this is the way Garmin universally treats proximity alerts or is there something I am doing wrong? Thanks

You need TourGuide, not POI

That's the way POI's work on Garmins. What you want to do is name your files with the word "TourGuide" in the filename. TourGuides work on a radius, whether they are on your route or not.

yes

with POI's, you have to be on the road approaching the poi for the alert to sound. If you want it to sound for off-the-road items, you have to use TourGuide.

Proximity Tour Guide

Thanks for the quick replys. Do I just rename quilt.gpx to something like TourGuideQ.gpx. I haven't read up on Tour Guides for specifics but will do so. Just wondering if this simple change would be me started.

Thanks again. I did a quick test and got a visual alert but not the audio. Does the alter .mp3 file need to be handled differently?

They have to be named the

They have to be named the same except the extensions.Example.

TourGuide quilt.gpx
TourGuide quilt.mp3

Note. With TourGuide in the name you will get a 1/4 mile radius alert using express mode.To increase that you will have to use the manual mode.

You folks are great. Really

You folks are great. Really appreciate it. Thanks for the tip about the default 1/4 mile radius. I also discovered that I needed to change the TourGuide setting to Automatic if I wanted the audio alert to always sound. Now it seems to be working like I had expected. We are leaving tomorrow for a trip east and my wife was worried we might miss out on some quilt shops. Now I've got to read up some more on TourGuide basics.
