I am still using Internet explorer7. I have not heard any bad news on the new Internet explorer8. Is it working good for those of you who installed it?

So far I haven't experienced any major problems. Occasionally a website will look distorted but I just click the "Compatibility View" button and IE8 will render the website correctly. I personally prefer IE8 over IE7.

I was just looking at the reviews. Not bad. I am surprised that the critics think firefox is a bit better. Oh! going through the slide show and suddenly it started to download the new version. I had to stop it. I will do it later

IE8 and Windows 7

IE8 is working fine under Windows XP Home for me. Another option folks should consider is the Windows 7 release candidate - working great.

no problems

I am in IT and we always suggest using the latest version... We primarily use Firefox because of the security issues but also because of the add-ons... but with IE we always suggest the latest version as they tend to have more fixes and better security.
IE7 was a jumbled load of junk until they released several updates but IE8 has worked very well with no problems.

XP and Vista....no issues

We use IE8 on XP and Vista computers at work with no issues at all. Compatibility mode, as stated above, solves any viewing issues. Only Wachovia's website required this for us so far.

About a week ago, Microsoft now lists IE8 in its Critical Windows Updates. This means that Windows will update to this version for you if your Automatic Updates are setup to do so.

IE8 is a significant upgrade with zero downsides so far. The tab grouping is especially nice.

Firefox and IE

For personal use I only use Firefox and have done so for quite some time. Sadly, I have yet to get the newer (3.0 and up) versions of Firefox to function properly with Flash applications. Upgrading to Flash 10 fixed some issues but not all. For instance, when I access audible.com, the control to listen to samples of books isn't available. That's a deal killer for me so I'm still running older Firefox software.

At work, we are constrained to use Internet Explorer but we are still using version 6. It's a state agency and we're mired down in bureaucracy and old systems. We use Citrix over Internet as a network system and they are extremely hesitant to implement anything new. Heck, we still use MS Office 2000 and aren't updated to Windows Service Pack 3 either.

I insltaled IE8 on my Vista

I installed IE8 on my Vista OS and the only issue I have discovered is that in the address bar, to the right, I lost the ability to see any previous history. Maybe this is just an adjustment issue but now, when I want to go to a website that I have visited recently, I have to reenter it all over again.

IE8 and XP Pro no issues

No issues here either. I downloaded IE8 Beta a few months ago and it ran like a dog. This latest IE 8 install is much quicker (as expected).

IE 8

I am a Firefox user, however it is my understanding that the new Web Updater will not work with IE8, and it will also be a problem when downloading mapping, due to the lack of Active X in IE8.

While I am not 100% solid on this, it is my understanding from friends still working at Garmin that this is an issue.

I am sure they are working "diligently" (pat answer) to get this resolved.

I have IE 8 and have use

I have IE 8 and have use Webupdater several times with it and have not had a problem. Can not speak about the maps because I had IE 7 when downloading them.No problems with IE 8 on anything else I have downloaded. It is faster.

Weird!!

I have installed IE8, only to uninstall it less than an hour later. When I updated the computer a couple weeks ago, it updated automatically. It wasn't worth a cr@p to me. For some unknown reason it didn't look or feel right. IE7 has been working just fine and no problems. So I think I will stay with IE7 for a while longer.

I tried Firefox, did not care for it, had to install add ons just to get it to work just as well as IE7.

I have Google Chrome, it's o.k. but cannot close it by hitting the X. I have to use F4 to close it.

...

Problematic computers (even if you do not see them on the surface) will have problems with IE8... not because IE8 has problems but because the computer itself has problems.

That is the only time I see problems with IE8... sometimes IE8 brings to surface other problems that you did not know the computer had. Usuall the best bet is that since the computer is having problems, back up what you can, format the hard drive, reinstall XP, get it to SP3 and ALL the Windows updates including IE8, then import the backups. Betcha IE8 will work fine!

I've had problems with IE8

I've had problems with IE8 and clean install of Windows 7. IE 8 was slow, incompatible with a number of important sites I use, and crashed very often.

I'll wait until an update / svc pack is released for IE8 before I jump on it. Never beta test for MS.

Firefox

I switched from Internet Explorer to Firefox and enjoy surfing a lot more.

IE6

Unfortunately, many folks in large organizations (private and public) are locked into older versions of software due to legacy application compatibility issues. Virtualization of applications should address most of the issues eventually.

Also of note, a significant big has been reported with the Windows 7 RC - it's still beta, so no one should be shocked.

Ok on my XP Computer

My company just outlawed all browsers except IE. So after taking Firefox off I uploaded 8.0 and it has been very solid. I miss the add ins but I have no choice on my work laptop

There are occaisional websites that hiccop on FF where you need to use IE. There's even a FF add-in called IE TABS that simply uses the IE engine inside FF for those few balky websites.

I love using a few FF add-ins that I highly recommend:
Ad-block Plus with Easy List subscription
NoScript, to block browser hijacks, unpermitted scripts, third party stuff
Xmarks, formerly known as Foxmarks...to synch bookmarks and optionally passwords and other stuff between multiple computers you use, even on different OS (I use a Mac, a PC, a Ubuntu Linux box) and all are kept perfectly in synch. You can have different profiles for work or home and switch them as appropriate too.
GMail Manager, to manage multiple gmail accounts easily, switch between them, get new mail notifications, etc.

You must keep IE for Windows/MS updates and a few balky websites, but otherwise you are much more in control and safer with Firefox.

I don't know. If it works with the existing plugins with version 2xx of Firefox, why would installing version 3xx cause them to be a problem? Maybe the latest 3xx version solves the problem. I guess I can try again. When I've tried in the past the entire button for the samples has been missing.

Thanks for the input.

For some unknown reason, IE7 quits running when I try to open an HTML file from my computer. After several unsuccessful attempts to remedy with IE help desk, I gave up and installed FIREFOX 3.0.9

I did more research and, even though Ad Block works fine with Firefox 2xx it doesn't work properly with Firefox 3xx. Even with the audible.com site white listed, the sample buttons were missing. Even with Ad Block disabled the buttons were missing. I completely uninstalled the thing and the buttons are back. Of course I now have the issue that all of the annoying ad sites I had blocked are no longer blocked.

I also having been using IE8 on my desktop and laptop and even at times I noticed it loaded somewhat slower than 7, I am currently happy with it. However, my primary browser I am using for my normal web activiy is Opera 9. It is lightweight and does a superb job of displaying most of the new web code being used on sophisticated websites.

I got this new laptop and even replaced Vista with the Windows 7 beta RC... and dual boot with Ubuntu 9.04.

What a mess Firefox is making..

I installed Firefox 3.0 the other day upon reading how great it is. I have been playing with it for a while. I like Firefox, but there is one problem so far. When I post message on the Delphi forums my signature is fine. Picture and all is normal. But when I edit it, it all disappears. My Blackberry does the same thing. If I edit it in IE there is no change in the signature. So all you Firefox experts, how does one fix that?

Good so far

Been using it a few weeks...far better than IE7 with one caveat to mention...It doesn't work on TWC Cable bill pay....not IE8s fault!

davidm33 wrote:

IE8 has Compatibility View that allows web sites designed for earlier browsers to display better. Will that let you pay your bill?

It Works!

Just tried that ...It works! Thanks for the tip CraigW !

IE8 crashes

I've had some sporadic crashes while using IE8 - certain websites will always crash it. Not sure if it's the browser itself or a plug-in, but metacritic.com, for instance, will always crash IE8 unless I quickly click compatibility view before the page finishes loading. Annoying, but not necessarily the fault of IE8. Might just be a combination of things (ie: installed browser plug-ins.)

I've also had some crashes

I've also had some crashes with IE8, but overall I will stay with it due to the features that it currently has..

Trouble here

I have had at least a little trouble with IE8 on this site. I am writing now under Firefox which I like. I had one other site that didn't work with IE8 but did work with the IE7 option for that tab. My problem here was simply logging on. I couldn't make the e-mail link (for help with logging on) work either. I am going to try it again with the IE7 option. I was surprised that no one else on this thread had that problem. It must be something about my machine.

IE8 working so far...

Upgraded a few weeks ago and have no issues so far...I like being able to delete individual urls, but only found that feature after I deleted some of the ones I frequent most...
