Geographic Limits

Are there any geographic limits to Custom POIs?
I have been creating sets of POIs for my forthcoming trip to China and I don't seem to be able to upload any beyond 115 degrees east - effectively excluding Beijing and Shanghai.
Having abandoned the detailed POI files for now, I have tried a dummy file with incremental points of longitude from 100 to 130 degrees at a fixed latitude. This was created in a spreadsheet and the CSV file uploaded using Garmins POI Loader to both a Nuvi 250W and 60CSx.
POI Loader reported that all 30 points were loaded, but neither unit showed any beyond 115.
Frankly I am at a bit of a loss and wondered if anyone in the forum has a solution.

.

Are you saying that they won't load?

Be aware that for an Custom POI list, the menu screens will show the 50 locations closest to your current position. The list will change as you move.

Have you tried searching for them on the unit by spelling the name?

Have you tried turning the GPS receiver function off and scrolling the map to China and looking for them that way?

china

I just got back from China two weeks ago and my 750 worked fine. I had loaded POIs for Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, the Three Gorges Dam, and some of the Yangtze River tributaries.

A way to verify your csv file

Assuming you got the coordinates correct, there should be no reason this wouldn't work that I can think of.

There is an excellent tool that is often mentioned in these pages that you can use to verify that you have a good file and can even show your POI on Google Earth.

Check here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21156

Use it to open your csv file. If everything is correct in your file, it should have no complaints. Then use F9 or the Tools pull down and select Open in Google Earth.

This should give you some confidence that your file is good and your points are accurate.

One other thought: (echoing what Motorcycle Mama said)Turn on GPS Simulator so that you can change your location to somewhere in China and then see if your POI show up. If that works, it may be some internal limitation in the GPSr on how far away a POI can be and be displayed.

I was able to recreate your issue. I built a test.csv file like you did starting with 0 and incremented by + and - 10° to 180 with a constant latitude and then loaded this file into my nüvi 750. I live near -100 and when I displayed this file, it listed all points in both directions from me except those between 10 and 150. I then went into simulation mode and set my position to some place in Afghanistan and two things happened: My screen went into nighttime display mode (after all it is nighttime over there when it's daylight here) and all those POI I couldn't find were now in the list, but those about 60° on either side of my real location were gone.

There appears to be an approximate 120° "blind spot" on the opposite side of the globe with respect to POI. I guess this would be an issue only if you were creating a route >5,000 miles.

If you verify your file with Extra POI Editor and they all display correctly on Google Earth using that tool, you should be good to go. And you can prove this to yourself on your GPSr by going to simulation mode. Bon Voyage! smile

They appear to load OK but I

They appear to load OK but I get "No Matches Found" for all POIs east of 115 degrees.
GPS navigation is turned off, so there should be no regional contention.
Can find waypoints and other cities in China no problem.

.

You probably need to deselect your North America maps.

And be sure that you are searching under Extras.

Solved!

They now show in simulation mode on my 250W, so I guess that it is an issue of range from my current position. Not tried them on the 60CSx yet, but I imagine that there will be no problem.
Thanks to all who have helped this forum's 'newbee'.
Great trip to China last year with my 60CSx, but sadly not with the China Navigator map. Now armed with over 200 POIs, should make this year's trip even more interesting. Richard.
