nuvi / WebUpdater offline updating tip

You can check your nuvi for updates (firmware/voices/etc.) using WebUpdater with out actually having the nuvi with you...

Get any SD Card and create a folder named Garmin on it. Copy GarminDevice.xml from the nuvi's x:/Garmin folder to the SD Card's Garmin folder.

Now, as long as you have that SD Card with you and have access to an SD Card reader on the PC, you can use WebUpdater to check for updates. Simply select the SD Card when prompted by WebUpdater. If there are updates, WebUpdater will download/transfer them to the SD Card. Then when you have access to the nuvi, you can simply copy the files from the SD Card to the nuvi using the same file/folder structure.

Note that this only works on removable drives as WebUpdater can only access that type of drive on the system.

EDIT:
In my testing, it did NOT work on an internal, external (removable), nor secondary hard disk partition.

The drive has to be flash-based as well as removable. I have tried it on a SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo card reader where it works just fine.

Also note that after downloading/transferring the files to the nuvi from the "phony nuvi" & before running WebUpdater normally on the real nuvi, you should rename GarminDevice.xml on the "phony nuvi" to something else like GarminDevice.xml.disabled or REMOVE the "phony nuvi" flash media from the PC.

The reason being is that WebUpdater gets confused if it sees both the real nuvi and the "phony nuvi" as being valid updatable devices at the same time.

Can you get the updates?

Any chance I could download a new update for later installation on the GPSr with this method?

As described in the original post

Yes you can...as described in the original post:

NOTE that it doesn't have to be an SD flash card. It also works with a USB flash drive. I guess it'll work as long as there's an external drive. I wonder if it works with a second partition on the hard disk.

Maybe that's

why some say their Nuvi's got updated on their own without internet connections. Because their SD card was configured that way.

removable flash media only

Yeah it looks like it only

Yeah it looks like it only works with a flash type drive. I use a Memorex 1GB USB flash drive. I just downloaded bluetooth firmware and a couple of voice updates to the Memorex drive.

Now what do I do with the downloaded files? Connect my GPS and cut/paste to the real GPS device, right?

Yup. Be sure and keep the same directory/file structure.
