885T discussion

I recently picked up an 885T after being a Tomtom user for years and years. I noticed there are plenty of reviews on this device, but I rarely see it mentioned here. Are people using it?

I love it, even though there are some features missing, it's still as close to a perfect GPS for me. Especially the ability to get MSN traffic without having it take over my bluetooth in my phone like the Tomtom would.

I purchased the 885T about 3

I purchased the 885T about 3 months ago and am very happy with it. As you state, it is mising a couple of things that I think should have been included, since they are in cheaper models. But I think I can live with not having the EcoRoute, for one. I do like the Voice activation and use it quite a bit. Although, not a feature, another reason I selected the 885T was the removable battery. I think this will come in handy if I ever need to replace it, and since I plan to keep it a long tine, I think I will appreciate this addition. Everything works great except in the MSN Flight Status. When I go to an airport and select the flight I am looking for, when I select GO TO, it freezes. Garmin is aware of this and is working on a fix. Hopefuly, they will find the fix before a year is up. I did find a work around..if, when your chosen flight appears..instead of selecting to GO TO, just select VIEW or SHOW or whatever it is, and then select GO TO, and it will not freeze and it will give you directions to the terminal you want. This may not be an issue on yours. The only other issue I have is a common one and that is that the FM transmitter is still under powered and I use it a lot when using bluetooth. All in all, it works great and no other issues and is feature packed with things I need and use. I like the Lane Assistance and I like when it shows me the HWY speed limits, especially snce it is right next to my current speed, so I can quickly and easily check to see if I am exceeding the limit. I purchases the Lifetime Maps and also the lifetime MSN Direct, so I think I am set for a while.

Good to hear your thoughts.

Good to hear your thoughts. I think I'm going to do lifetime maps and MSN. After watching the GPS path over the last 10 years I think we're nearing a point where there isn't much more they can pack into them and the real upgrades are going to be better traffic which I assume will be available through MSN.

Time will tell but this might be my last GPS until they truly become commoditised which I think they almost are at this point. Soon every phone and device will have a built in usable GPS and a separate one for the car might not be as necessary. We'll see, but assuming I keep this for 3-5 years, I think the lifetime will be worth it.

The removable battery is

The removable battery is very much a plus, it has saved me several times on by just removing the battery, like when a pc is frozen and you have to restart it but shutting it off and rebooting it, instead of sending the unit into Garmin, just yanking the battery out of the unit for say, 15 minutes, clears out the cache and everything resets it self back to normal, I will never purchase another unit unless it has that feature, a removable battery.
