Speed-camera bill brought back to life, OK'd

The Maryland Senate gave final approval Thursday to a broad speed-camera program it had voted down a day earlier.

With the passage of this bill after it had been defeated a day earlier, Maryland begins to travel the sane path taken by many other localities. What will be interesting will be seeing how they intend to use speed cameras in school zones near major roads. These roads have variable speed limits, in that the speed is reduced during school hours only. One local road I travel has the speed drop from 45 to 35. Traveling 45 during non school hours would trigger the camera in many instances as the cameras normally have a 10 MPH tolerance.

Cameras

The software should be able to take that into account, different speeds at different times of the day. Where you will get in trouble is if the programming doesn't match the yellow flashing lights - say for summer or a holiday.

If I was setting it up I would come off the flashing yellow light timer to trigger the lower speed alert in the camera. This way they are always the same.

I don't work on these systems (redlight/speed cameras), but do work on video and access control/security systems in nursing homes and hospitals. The technology should be the same in theory.

School zone cameras

With many schools around MD the control for the flashing lights are either controlled manually from within the school building or with a timer in the school. This makes it the school administration's responsibility to be certain the timer and/or lights are off when not in session. I have driven past many schools during times when the school was closed and the lights are flashing all because someone didn't change the timer.

Yep

That is why if they don't sync the cameras to the flashing lights it will be a huge can of worms. Because what will happen is someone will forget to turn on the flashing lights, but the camera is still looking for a 20 mph speed....
