How to convert GPX file to route on Nuvi760

I picked up a Nuvi760 the other day, and I bought this unit specifically for the ability to load routes. I found a website with all manner of cool motorcycle loops/rides, and it will allow downloads in a variety of formats.

The issue is I download them in both gdb and gpx, but when I open them in Mapsource they appear as a dotted line. If I select the waypoints and have MapSource generate a map, it skips a lot of the track. How can I output a route based on that 'track' (one that follows the dotted line)?

Seems like all the data is in the file I download, but getting it to a format the Nuvi likes to use for a route is not as straightforward as I'd thought. The website I am getting the files from is www.sundaymorningrides.com.

Thanks,
Ray

Your nuvi won't read tracks, so you have to convert the files you downloaded from SMR into routes.

There's no automatic way to do it in MapSource. You will need to use the Routing Tool to manually trace over the track and create a Route.

And then you can send that Route to the nuvi from MapSource.

Thanks for the reply! So

Thanks for the reply! So when I trace over it with the routing tool, does direction matter? Say I have a 'loop' ride, and I draw the route counter clockwise, is that how the unit will route me when I pull up the route on the unit?

From your handle I presume you ride as well, any good sites with routes/tracks, similar to SMR?

Tracing tracks to create a route

It's adviseable to trace the route in the direction you want to go. Once you have your route, you can go to the route properties and re-order the waypoints if you like. BUT!.......

Reversing a saved route can give you horrible results depending on where the intermediate waypoints are located. There are almost always unexpected consequences when you try to reverse a route because both Mapsource and your GPS will route you to the all original waypoints/vias which could be on one way streets, or on the wrong side of a divided highways when the original route is reversed. Try it in mapsource and you'll see what I mean.

If you really want a saved route that works correctly in both directions you better plan it very carefully or plan and save a separate route for each direction.

The route will come up whichever way you plot it which may or may not be the same as the way that the track was recorded. But either will work.

SMR is a good site. I posted a couple of rides there. Another one is http://www.track-n-share.com/ I believe it's relatively new.
