New to POI Factory-Having Trouble Loading on Garmin

I have a Garmin Nuvi 850. I am retired US Navy, so I down loaded the military campground POI file and the Combined campground file.

I uploaded these to my Garmin with the Garming POI Loader. This worked fine and did showup on the Garmin in the Extra Section as Custom POIs.

I then downloaded the Walmart-Sams POI file. Tried to upload that to my Garmin. Message said "successful". However, when I go to the extra section custom POIs on the Garmin, Walmart and Sams does not appear. What am I doing wrong?

Hi gkeefe,

Keep all your POI files in the same folder/directory and when you use the POI Loader, point it to “that“ folder/directory.

All POI files in that folder will be uploaded at the same time. If you “add” a POI file to that folder/directory it will upload “all” the POI files and not just the new POI you‘ve added. The POI Loader overwrites the existing POI files on your unit, with the contents of the files, in the folder/directory you’ve chosen. I keep all my POI files in a folder, on my hard drive, called...POI.

Conversely, if you want to remove a POI file you’ve already uploaded to your unit, just remove that POI file, from the folder/directory on your hard drive and run the POI Loader again.

HTH (hope that helps)

Regards,

Tailspin

There are a couple of things that could be happening. The first thing to check is where the source files are on your PC. They need to be in a folder and not as standalone files. A second and very common problem is that of double extensions. If you are using Windows, be certain the file does not have two extensions (.csv.csv). As a default windows hides the extension of known file types, and this is something you need to uncheck in Windows Explorer.

The new files MUST be in the same folder as the others. If you want to display icons and have alert sounds, those need to be in the same folder as well. The POI file (probably a CSV) along with the sound and icon file must have EXACTLY the same name with the exception of the file extension.

Let's assume you have a folder on your desktop called POI where you put all your input files. This folder can be organized with subfolders, but only 1 level deep. Now you can put the source files into subfolders making the update process a little easier.

POI (top level folder)
> Shopping (subfolder)
>>Wal-Mart.csv
>>Wal-Mart.bmp
>>Wal-Mart.mp3
> Campgrounds
>>Military Campgrounds.csv
>>Military Campgrounds.bmp
>>Military Campgrounds.mp3
>>Combined Campgrounds.csv
>>Combined Campgrounds.bmp
>>Combined Campgrounds.mp3
> Fuel Stops
>>FlyingJ.csv
>>FlyingJ.bmp
>>FlyingJ.mps
>>TA Travel Plazas.csv
>>TA Travel Plazas.bmp
>>TA Travel Plazas.mp3

I think you will get the idea.

When you update, you only need to update and reload the subfolder instead of the entire folder.
