Nuvi 660 and POI (Operation during a trip to a destination)

Hello.. First time poster here..
I have an operational question regarding POI's and the Garmin NUVI 660. I have successfully loaded POI's into the 660, and I also have the most current firmware and Maps in the 660, but I have yet to see anything pop up (say for example--Cracker Barrel) even with I'm sitting in front of the location!

No-where in Ops Manual (Including the latest on Garmin Website) as to How POI's are to be used in detail... So I post here...

I live near Chicago.. Let's say I've selected a Destination in North Carolina, and we are in middle of Indiana on our way to North Carolina.

Up till this time, we have gone past 4-5 Cracker Barrels. and have seen nothing on the scren for that so far. WHY??

If I'm in the middle of a route to a destination, and manually select POI's, Cracker Barrel, how do I know the switch to a Cracker Barrel destination won't take me off the route to my origional North Carolina destination... and off in a different direction?

Am I mis-interpreting the use of POI's, or how POI's are used in the NUVI 660??

As of yet, I have yet to see any Cracker Barrel logos, or heard any Cracker Barrel audio prompts, even though I have them enabled, and see them in POI's...
Thanks for your replies...

Did you SET an alert when you loaded the Custom POIs? Regular Custom POIs don't alert by default.

You must set an alert if you want an alert to sound. You can run POI Loader in Manual Mode and set whatever alerts you want. Or you can put some alert information in the files themselves.

If you run POI Loader in Manual Mode instead of Express Mode, you can set whatever alerts you wish.

Check out Phil's great guide for more information about alerts.

Hornbyp's guide to setting alerts with POI Loader
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6764

It's important to understand how the proximity alerts work on Garmin auto units.

The alerts do NOT function as a radius, but rather they function as an "along the road/route" alert.

In order to get an alert several things must be true.

1. You must set an alert either through information in the file or via POI Loader being run in Manual Mode and an alert being manually entered.

2. Alerts must be enabled on your unit.

3. You must be traveling on the road on which the POI is located and traveling in the direction of the POI.

4. The POI must be sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet or less).

660 Problems

JanJ,
The problem setting your POI Loader to Manual is that it can take a long time to load the files, that is, if you have many Custom POI's.

POI Changes... Am I correct?

Thanks to both of you... for the info...

So, I made the following changes.... tell me if I'm correct...

Un-installed all POI's with POI Loader.
Then, went back into POI Loader, and went into manual mode...
Left Speed at 0 mph (is this correct?)
Changed distance for 5000 feet, to get some advance notice....

The files: Cracker Barrel and Sams/Wallmart were uploaded...

Next.. in the NUVI 660, Configuration, Proximity points/Alerts Change/Custom POI's/Audio --- set for Continuous - All Alerts....

This is all I should do, and NOW the Cracker Barrell and Sams/Wallmarts should display on the unit?

Am I now OK?

This information should be in manual, but I cannot find it...

I've got more info here than the NUVI Manual!!
Thaks again for your comments...

Yes, that looks correct. But again, be aware that the alerts don't work as a radius. So, if the location isn't on the road you are on, you will likely not get an alert.

And if you are looking for the icons on the map screen, you need to zoom in on the map to 300 feet or closer in a 2D (not 3D) map mode.

Probably Not Going to Work as you would like.

Remember Motorcycle Mama's point that you must be on the same road as the POI for an alert to trigger. I believe all of the Cracker Barrels are located on crossroads of the interstates, not the interstates themselves. To get a radial alert, you would have to convert them to a TourGuide, but that might get you a nearly continuous alert if you live in an area near one or more of these sites. An alternative would be to use the built-in POIs and search NEAR/Along-Current-Route. Then all locations would be within 3/4 mile of the interstate.

Edit: Note to self -- learn to type faster.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Works, but now more questions!

OK!! Success!! told it to go to mother-in-laws house across town, and the route goes by 2 Walgreens....

Oh yes, erased everything, loaded via 8000 ft Cracker Barrel, Combo Sams/Wallmart/Superstore, and Walgreens... (I Now understand it's speed OR Feet)...
Worked on Walgreens... and even interrupted it and set Wallgreens as stop along the way....

OK... I'm learning and it works... But...

Now two new questions.... I downloaded .BMP files and .MP3 audio files....

Why didn't I see them or hear them when it did work???

(Ain't Newbee's Fun???)

more questions!

they all need to be named the same like
cracker barrel cvs
cracker barrel mp3
cracker barrel bmp and all in the same folder

Yes.... That was done.... Do

Yes.... That was done....

Do I manually upload them other than POILOADER?

Or, did it happen at same time as the .cvs upload with POILoader??

Did you rename these files to the same name?

CB.csv
CB.bmp
CB.mp3

They also have to be in the same folder.

You also have to be zoomed in to view bmp icons per MM's post above.

When you run POI Loader is automatically erases previously loaded custom pois (poi.gpi file).

You don't have to drive to test these out.

You can use the Simulation Mode. If you are not near location that you want to test, you can use Set Location to move your location near your test site. Do a Where to>select test location (or a location past test site if testing alerts) and it will only take a few seconds to get alerts, see bmp icons (if zoomed in).

These is a lot of discussion about this on this site. Try searching on Simulation Mode or refer to Owners Manual for details.

Let us know if you get it to work or have questions.

You don't have to drive to the test location. Turn on Simulation and pick a simulated route that takes you past the site.

OK.. Your posts about not

OK.. Your posts about not driving came after I was in car. Oh well...
Anyway... Tested Walgreens, Target, Sams club, and on ieach I get no ICON's, just a grey dot, and no MP3 audio....

The files (using walgreens as an example)
are:
walgreens.csv
Walgreens_Pharmacy_ahead.mp3
Walgreens2.bmp

Could it be that they all must have EXACT naming?
walgreens.csv
wallgreens.mp3
wallgreens.bmp

?????

Thanks to all!! IT

Thanks to all!!

IT WORKS!!!

You know, if there were a couple paragraphs in the manual regarding this.... HOURS of confusion would have been avoided!!

Another note: I chages Proximity prompts from continuous to Speed, to minimize beeping when stopped...

THANKS!! Now I can go back to enjoying what's left of the weekend!!!

Plenty of instructions right here.

Since Garmin considers Custom POIs to be a third party product, they aren't going to include a lot of instructions in the unit user manual. There is, however, a good amount of information in the POI Loader Help File.
