Garmin Nuvi with Voice Recognition

I was looking at the Garmin Nuvi 885T being shown in demo mode and watched it select pre-loaded POI's by voice recognition. However, will the voice recognition work with custom POI's that are downloaded to the SD Card. Just wondered how you would get the the Custom POI directory instead of the Pre-loaded directory.

If the voice-recognition works . . .

If the voice-recognition works correcly then it should go to the folder you speak whether it's preintstalled POI's or the "extras" where Garmin seems to make us store our custom files.

I didn't know Garmin was working on this feature but I'm glad to hear its coming!

voice recognition

If it works well, that is a nice feature. How do you like it?

Voice recognition

It sure would be a feature that I would want.

Perhaps I'm not

Perhaps I'm not understanding, but this is not something Garmin is working on, it exists and has for awhile now. You can go to virtually anything by voice that you can by touchscreen. You would say menu, where to, extas, etc....... just as you would with the touch screen. My experience using my friends - it works quite well, but you must use the remote first to tell the unit you are going to speak. And I know it would seem talking would make it safer while driving, I found it is not much different in that regard. Why? because you have to say exactly what is on the screen so sometimes that means looking at the screen anyway unless you can remember the exact wording. Some will definately find it useful, I think others will not think it is necessary. Having to keep the remote around makes it not a must have feature for me.

Nuvi Voice Recognition Works well

I picked-up a Garmin 885t gps this week and can say the voice recognition works very well. Whatever words are on the screen it will recognize and take you there. Memorizing the words is not a problem. There is no difference between looking at the screen map to see where you are than looking at the words and speaking them.

The really kool thing about the technology is it's find feature. I can tell it to find the nearest gas station and viola, up pops my choices with the price for regular gas. Or I can tell it to find McDonalds and once again it will pop up choices, I tell it which choice I want, and it plots the route - all using voice command. Yes, you need the remote to make it work, but the remote is a thumb button which attaches to the steering wheel like a watch band attaches to your arm - very unobtrusive. Gave my Nuvi 660 to my wife, but she rather have my 885t for cross country distance traveling. The radar wx feature through MSN Direct is also way kool

I don't use the bluetooth phone feature. I've read some comments that this particular feature doesn't work as well as it could, others have said they have not had a problem with this feature. I can't respond to that since I don't use a blutooth phone, instead relying upon my built in phone feature through Onstar, if I really really need to talk with/to someone while driving.

I too, have the 885T and

I too, have the 885T and find the voice activation really cool, It takes time for me to get used to it, however, I keep trying to touch the screen instead. Truthfully, I think it takes me more time to do voice activation than it does the touch screen but I guess the idea is that you can keep your eyes on the road. Unfortunately, even with voice, you often have to put your eyes on the screen to determine what line you want to be used. So, in that instance, it defeats the purpose but usually I can make selections on the screen without looking at it.

Yes, that was my thought

Yes, that was my thought also, but it is cool...

Yes, always the new toys.

Yes, always the new toys. For the money, it probably, really isn't worth it unless you just like the newest toy.

it might be worth if it

it might be worth if it works
