I've been surprising myself by how easy it is to make personal POI's using the Extra_POI_Editor. However, I have a question. I put an alert signal of 50 or 75 meters on a residendual address and the Garmin never beeps unless I have that particular address programmed as the destination. I thought it was supposed to beep when we drove by enroute to another destination. I'm using a Nuvi 260.
Some answers
Answer 1
It should alert when you drive down the same street past this address. You must be within 50-75 meters of the address (provided lon, lat are correct).
Could be you haven't POIloaded a wav/mp3 and icon with this csv? Without them you get a tone and tan box icon alert.
Answer 2
A proximity alert will trigger when entering within the 50-75 meter radius. To get this alert rename your csv file 'TourGuide yourname.csv'. Remember to name wav/mp3 and icon same name as csv file name.

The POI Loader has the capability of designating files for proximity alert. When loading files select manual. As you move through the files to be loaded you will see radipo buttons for speed or distance. Properly selected POI Loader will load that file with an alert. Load an MP3 file long with it and the alert will be vocal. There are several threads on this forum that discuss proximity aleerts in more detail.

Just . . .

Make sure the coordinates are right next to the road -- more than 50 ft or so off the road and it won't trigger. Also, 50-75 meters is possibly too short for your proximity distance; by the time the gps realizes you are within that distance, retrieves the alert signal and starts to announce, you might be past the POI and it cancels.
Just to clarify one point mentioned above, proximity alerts are normally of the "along-the-route" variety, and only alert if you are on the same street and the coordinates are within 50 ft or so of that street. You can convert the alert to a radial alert by changing it to a TourGuide. You will probably soon tire of most alerts other than cameras and perhaps rest areas, but I understand your desire to understand why/how they work.
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.
Thanks, How do I convert to a TourGuide
How do I make a TourGuide?

Easy enough, rename yourname.csv to yourname TourGuide.csv. Adding TourGuide after yourname.csv allows you to read more of the poi group name when selecting on GPS.
TourGuide
TourGuide has to be in the name for the csv, bmp, and mp3 or wav.
Be sure to use manual and you might want to limit the distance on these, because it will now be doing it in a radius for a TourGuide file.
Non TourGuide files only see those poi's that are on the street you are travelling, so you miss many that are within a block or two of the road.
I have been making most of my TourGuide files 1200 feet, but I am still playing with it to find the best distance for the different poi's.
