TomTom Now Has Map Update Subscription for NA

TomTom is now offering a 4-quarter map update service. If you have a current map, it will cost you 11.95 per quarter or 47.80 per year. If your map is not current, you will need to buy the upgrades to make your map current first. My map was three quarters behind, and it only cost me about USD 30 to bring it up to date.

Very interesting. The cost

Very interesting. The cost of the updates seem fairly reasonable per update. This is a contrast in strategy to the Nuvi lifetime maps which has a single, but expensive lifetime charge.

I think I prefer this model a bit more. It's nice having competition in this space.

It was only a matter of time

I think before long you will see this across the board. I was very pleased to see Garmin do this. I think that this is a huge selling point for these guys.

This I will likely go for.

This I will likely go for. The updated maps didn't seem to have enough updates to bother with for my area.

A link for this thread.

thanks for letting us know.

I ended up signing up for it

I ended up signing up for it myself - my maps were a full year out of date - so - it cost me $47 to update to the current map, and then 47 for the next years subscription.

Not bad all in all - only $6 more than flat out buying a map, and I get another year of map updates.

I am definatly more enticed to continue to use the update service also to keep myself updated.

Without the update service - I would have gone another year or two before purchasing a map.

confused

Ok - I understand that if you do not currently have the latest maps, then you have to purchase the latest map to obtain a subscription.

I currently have 8.15 maps (bought the unit in December). But I thought I would have to pay say $79 for the latest 8.25 maps, and then start the subscription.

Are you guys saying that I would only need to pay the quarterly fee, ie $19, and then pay for the year's sub for $49?

TIA

Right

They are selling the maps at a discount. It cost me about $80 to upgrade from 8.15 to 8.25 and get the annual subscription.

Since you currently have 8.15 maps, the total cost for bringing your unit up to the latest maps + 1 full year of map updates (pre-paid) will be approximately in the $50 - $60 range.

You can get an exact breakdown of the cost by using TomTom Home:

  • plug your TomTom into your computer with the USB cable.
  • open the TomTom Home Software - if you don’t have the updated version, download it here: http://www.tomtom.com/services/service.php?id=16&tab=87
  • then click on “Add Maps” and you will be able to see the cost of quarterly map updates for your device.

I actually work with TomTom, so let me know how this works out for you.

confused

I did the same thing, i upgraded in december. then in march i got the subscription, but i think it will be worth it. cool

Great - Thanks Jeff! Now, do

Great - Thanks Jeff!

Now, do you know if the beta route planner has the latest maps? Will be a good way to test for known errors that I had submitted back in December to see if they got incorporated.

lucky

luckily, i bought a tomtom after this service started.. so, i was able to upgrade with the latest map gaurantee (had some trouble with it) and get this service for under $50.. hopefully its worth it

newest map

i connected my tomtom and was informed that the newest map was available to me now..im more satisfied with this update service now that i have seen it action

I updated my map this weekend

When I connected to TomTom home, it offered me an upgrade to my NA map. Other than forgetting how long it takes to download a 1.7 GB file shock it was very easy.

I was a little concerned because I never received an email confirming my purchase, although I did save a screenshot. The system worked as advertised!

Shooter,
Previous to this map download, what was your last map download through TT Home?

Last Map Download March 15

Tendriver,

My last map download was on March 15, 2009, when I purchased the annual update. I had to also purchase the update to 8.25 since I still had 8.20.

Edited to correct map version numbers.

Thanx. That answers my question. I would have to buy all the updates from 720 to 830.

Shooter, I'd recommend signing in to TomTom Home software and double-checking that your correct e-mail address is loaded in there. That may be the reason why you didn't get a confirmation e-mail from TomTom.

If your e-mail address was correct, though, definitely call customer support: 866-486-6866. They should be able to look up your account and send you a copy of your map update subscription service receipt.

This vs the Map updates

What is the difference between this program and the updates you get when you log on to TTHome??

This is for the quarterly NEW maps. I believe you are referring to the daily mapshare updates.

Update Both Europe and North America maps??

I just purchased a TomTom 930T and I live in North America. Would I get maps of both Europe and North America with the 1 year map update service?
thanks

When is the next map update?

Thanks for the info. Shooter. I was hoping it would update both maps. Does anyone know when a new US and Europe map will be available?

soon?

Judging from the fact that no more mapshare updates have been downloaded (at least for me) in the last three days, and garmin JUST released their new maps, I would say we are bound to get a new map pretty darn soon. I would say sometime in the beginning of august.. or at least im hoping thats the case! I cant wait to see what has changed. Still havnt pulled the trigger on the subscription service though. Although i might when the new map comes out.
