Magellan 4040 on a Motorcycle

Has anyone tried to use a 4040 on their motorcycle? The book says this is a no-no, I guess because of the vibration, etc.
Any ideas??

Yes, bad idea.

Vibration, dust, rain.....not built for any of that.
I have a 4250 which is similar. I plan to keep mine in my jacket pocket or otherwise packed away unitl I really need it.

My personal opinion is that having one accessible while you ride is a BIG safety problem.......but all of the folks that want to do that are apparently EXPERT riders and take offense at that idea !!! mrgreen

4040 on a Motorcycle

Thanks for the input! I suppose I will just have to stop and ask directions! All I probably really need is one of the NEW Sportster speedometers with the time and stuff on it.....

Another suggestion

While I no longer ride, let me throw this out. A lot of tank bags have map pockets. The 4040 should fit in the map pocket and you could then see it when you needed to take a peek. Not a real good location for alerting you about anything, but it would help along the route.

Plus 1 on this suggestion. I tried a bar mount with my 250W and found it very distracting, something I really don't need on a motorcycle. My new Garmin 780 has blue tooth so this year I will try using that in conjunction with the tank bag.

We have a 2003 HD EGC and use our 260 on it --

We bought a leather magnetic mount tank bag to mount the GPS unit in. The bag has a top pouch with a clear panel that fits perfect and we can work the touch panel with gloves on. I put a folded facecloth under the 260 which helps absorb almost all of the vibration and helps hold the display against the plastic window area. Added a 12 VDC adapter to the accessory switch (HD built-in) and all works well. The EGC had cig lighter in faring but adapter would hit when turning to the left.

Only real complaint -- can't always see display very well in sun light and (of course) can't hear any voice commands smile Just my 2 cents....

Magellan 4040 on a Motorcycle

Thanks for all the comments. I dug out an old Magellan Sporttrak from my basement and probably this will do what I need... turn it on put it in my pocket and look at it when stopped. I forgot about the power needed and I would have to get into rewiring my Sportster for the 4040. (plus it records waypoints while on)

We use a Garmin 2720

We us a Garmin 2720. You can get them now for $100 (refurbished). That's how we got ours, works just great.

YOu have to buy the mounting hardware extra.

Magellan 4250 on Mount Guys RAM Motorcycle Mount

We use our 4250 in a RAM mount on our Honda Shadow Spirit 750. We also use a glare shield (Velcro and fabric) from Mount Guys. No problems at all. We recharge it with a cigar lighter extension hooked to our Battery Tender plug when necessary. If it is raining, we put the 4250 in our bag.

As long as you are not riding it on very rough off- road or for dirt-bike type riding, you'll not have any problems.
