New User needs some help and friendly advice

I am new to this web site and just bought my Garmin 255W. I downloaded the Combined Rest Area file to Windows, and have (evidently) loaded it to my GPS. When I ran the simulator past one of the rest areas, I see an indicator of "04" and a single chime went off based on my proximity alert distance. What I can't figure out is how to set the BMP icon and the audable alert. Should those have come in my download of the "Rest Areas Combined" file? All I got was the excel/csv file. I've tried to download just the icon that I wanted, and name it to be the same as the rest area file, but there does not appear to be anyway to do that. Any advice for a "newbee" to POI-Factory???

Make sure they have the same name.

All right, I just went to that link and I got the page that shows the various rest areas and the icons & alerts avaiable. I've read that I must have the name the same as the file, but I can't see how to download the icon and voice files if they don't come with the total combined file. Am I missing something??? Again, thanks in advace for any advice you can give.

Double Click mouse

on the one you want. Than right click on the file you want. and than click on the save. Than it should save in whatever directory you want. You can only use wav files with 255w, so either you download it, or must convert a mp3 to a wav.

Hope this helps.

To save Icon (and Sound)

To save Icon (and Sound) Files - Right Click on bmp (and wav) file>Save Target As>Select Folder where your POI file is (you can also change file name here if needed)>Save.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I "right clicked" on the audio file and got the download as an MP3 file. Now for a couple of more questions. First, do I need to convert it to a WMA file for the 255W and second, do I need to rename it to the same file name as the Combined Rest Area file? Got to go - my MSU Spartans are playing basketball and I've got to root them on so they get a No. 1 seed in the NCAA.

Yes

It has to have the same name, and it has to be a wav file, not wma.

The wav file...

...and the .wav file has to be encoded “mono” not “stereo”, in order for it to work.

Thanks to All

I want to say thank you to everyone for the help you gave me. I have sucessfully downloaded some files to my Garmin GPS. Especially helpful was the email from Charley (charlesd45). I think the POI-Factory should incorporate the information in his email into their "Getting Started" section. For a Newbee, it guided me through the process and now I can follow what everyone else was telling me. Again, Thanks Everyone!!!

265t

Hi all, I just purchased the 265t and the phonebook worked great the first day, then I updated the fireware to 5.0 and now I have no phonebook. Can any tell me if it is possible to downgrade to an earlier version? Im not sure what Version came installed on it, I'm guesssing 4.80 or 4.60. I have tred the downloader and gpsinmormation site, but I can't find 4.80 anywhere. Dell won't take it back without a 15% re-stocking fee and Garmin said my phone isnt compatible, even though it work before the upgrade. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Similiar experience...

I just went through this, with my 660. I updated the SW version and also chose the prompt to upgrade the Bluetooth SW. Bad move, and that's when the fun began.
My phone worked faithfully with the old version but not the newer one. I contacted Garmin after many frustrating nights and they were nice enough to send me the previous BT SW version file in an email.
You want to do the same thing.
