2010 Map Updates

Well we are now into March and if things go as last year we should be hearing rumors of Garmin 2010 map updates.

Has anybody tapped into the grapevine and can share some news?

should be real soon.

2010 maps

Could someone explain how how I can check if the 2010 update maps when they come out are really necessary. At this time, I am still using 2008.
Thanks,

On Garmin Site

When the new maps come out you can look at the maps on Garmins site. You can look up your house or neighborhood. if you go there now you can look at 2009 maps.

Based On Your Usage

AR,

If the places you normally travel or expect to visit are established without a lot of new roads then there's really little need to update. If you're going someplace where there's a lot of new construction then it's probably a good idea to update at least every couple of years. Annual updates are usually only necessary for professional drivers.

Cheers

any chance you have the specific link to the part of the Garmin site that allows you to check your house and local area for any changes?

and are the new quatrely updates such as 2009.11 viewable in the same manner?

Try here:

From what I see by looking at my city, this is the original City Navigator North America 2009 map, not the newest 2009.11 quarterly update. Unless someone else can point us to a 2009.11-viewable map, it may be that the generally most current quarterly maps may not be viewable online.

Now if you get the "maps for

Now if you get the "maps for life" you will get the newest maps for free all the time. I am really debating about it. With my just buying my Nuvi 760 about a month ago, it may be a good investment.

maps for life

I drive all the time so I did sign up for the maps for life. There is always road construction in my area. New roads put in and old ones that used to cross freeways closed.

Maps for life

I also just bought a nuvi 760 and think that the maps for life would be a good purchase considering how much the individual updates cost.

Just received my new 755t,

Just received my new 755t, I'm going to wait before registering it so I can hopefully get the 2010 update for free.

Waiting to register does nothing for you.

The new nuvi units log when a satellite was first acquired. That is the date they use to start the clock on the free update, not when you register it. Sometimes the first sat lock is off (e.g. before you purchased the unit) and you may need to have proof of purchase to get your free update - but only in the event that the first sat lock date is off.

If you let the unit acquire sat lock before you register it, and you should, the sat lock date will show in your "My garmin" account so you can find out when it is.

2010 maps

If shipping doesn't pick up, I won't even be needing the 2010 updates! Something has GOT to happen. Contrary to the CSX ads, without trucks, America stops! crying

I haven't

I haven't look at it

2010 thought

I may buy the 2010 update for my Nuvi 760 and then just let it age out, ie replace the unit in 2011. I'll be watching for the 2010 release.

shouldnt the map updates

shouldnt the map updates come out roughly the same time every year?

Updated Points of Interest

More important to me than roads is updated points of interest.

A few years ago my GPS took me to a Friendly's restaurant for lunch. The problem was that it had been sold and converted into a Mosque and I couldn't have lunch there.

Many businesses come and go over time and new maps keep you up to date on them.

Cost of 2010 maps?

How much were the 2009 maps??? thanks

.

MSRP $69 US

Model specific??

Question:
I have a Nuvi 660 and I bought my college kid a Nuvi 750 for christmas. If I sign up for the maps for life. Can I use it to update both 660 and 750? Just curious. I'm not a professional driver. I update my map every 3-4 years. That's plenty for me.

No you have to purchase for

No you have to purchase for each. They are tied to the GPS unit.

April 31? I guess that must equal May 1? smile

Updated Points of Interest

The POI Factory is a much more current source of Points of Interest than Garmin. Considering the speed with which restaurants pop up and fold, you are better off to find a POI file here. I have downloaded files for some of my favourite restaurants and found tons of new locations and quite a few "relocations" compared to the 2008 map version I am using from Garmin.

I am not being critical of Garmin, but the user-created files on this site are much better for personal use.

According to information I

According to information I got on here a while back the POI's supplied with the unit can be anywhere from 4 to 8 years old. In the case of some categories, restaurants in particular, that can be very much out of date. I agree that you're much more likely to get current information on here.

Road Changes & Updates

Well, at least I hope they get all of the road changes because they are changing what used to be called "Malfunction Junction". surprised

I know of one change

On the NavTeq map they have incorporated the change I requested about a year ago. Hopefully it will be in the 2010 update.

I'm downloading the 2010 map update now with my lifetime maps

I'm downloading the 2010 map update now. It showed this morning when I logged into my My Garmin account as an available update for my lifetime maps Subscription.

It shows up when you click on the updated map details link and opens the screen to complete the download.

lifetime map download

How long does it take to download the new maps on line. i had used the disk on my last update. I am on a DSL line

.

Depending upon your actual download speed, you can expect it to be 4-6 hours.

I can get it to download to

I can get it to download to the computer, but I can't get it to go to my 760. Something about a problem connecting to the Garmin server or something like that. Any good hints or is it just server is busy

Use Mapsource?

Would it be possible to import the map into Mapsource and then use Mapsource to d/load to the unit?

.

Bob, see the other thread:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21852

It has more info on the issues with the new update.

Never tried the MapSource thing.

Lifetime Map Download

Dwshouston,

I downloaded on 4-7-09 and it took 12 hours on a sprint 3g network. About 8 hours into the download I was tired of waiting and just out of boredum I clicked on the pause button. Restarted in about 30 seconds and download speed improved greatly. The install took over 2 hours. The map I have now is the 2009.11

Why 2009.11?

The maps that are now loaded on my Nüvi 750 are CN North America NT 2010.10. This was downloaded through the lifetime maps subscription last night.

Looks like you were there one day to soon

On the 8th they released 2010.1 map update. Looks like you were there one day to soon and got the January map update instead of the new April map update.

STORY OF MY LIFE

One day to early. Who would have guessed they would update on the 8th instead of the 1st of April? Next time I will wait till the middle of the month or better yet until someone else reports a new map update and download.

Thanks

Thanks for Info

Thanks for Info. I am not sure if more things have changed since we got 2009.11 update!! But anyways, its good to hear that Garmin still is in the business of updating their maps!! I love Garmin!!

2010 Update

I was eligible for the one time update (it expires Sunday 4/11). I downloaded the 2010 yesterday (took about 50 minutes) and it would not install. I called Support and he said they had a problem they were working on and it should be up today. About nine thirty this morning I tried again and it installed cleanly in less than a half hour.

Fast Update!!

Are you talking about downloading from the site in 1/2 hour or moving to the GPSr? I have never heard of an update that took less than 1.5 to 2 hours!!

The download was about 50-55 minutes. The installation after extraction took the balance of time.

John

so the 2010 maps are

so the 2010 maps are available now right...I just bought a garmin 855...and wanted to see if I could upgrade

2010.10

The first 2010 version came out in April (version 2010.10). Garmin releases map updates up to 4 times a year, so the next version is expected soon. You might want to wait a little while to download until the new version is out. The nuMaps gaurantee gives you 60 days to update maps on a new Garmin, but you can only update one time.
