new at this GPS thing (setting alerts on nuvi)

I'm new at this GPS thing and I need some help. I have a nuvi 260 and I downloaded the rest area POI's. I'd like to set the alerts for the rest areas but I can't seem to find how to activate this feature. The nuvi 260 user manual seems to indicate that this feature is available...can't seem to get it to work.

When you run poiloader to

When you run poiloader to install the custom poi file to your unit select manual instead of express. You will have option to set the distance.
If you need to download poiloader go to http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/

quick reply and another question

Thanks for the quick reply! One other question that I just thought of...Once the alert is turned on is there a way to shut it off if it gets too annoying?

Mute

Not without muting the whole unit. There is no "stop alerting me" button. That is why I load very few audio alert files with my POI files. The rest area combined file is one of the few exceptions.

And make sure your proximity alert is turned on.
wrench>settings>proximity Points>custom pois checked...
If you want a voice audio alert you will need to use a wav file and have sox.exe installed in the same folder as the poi loader.. You can find where to download sox.exe by doing a search for sox on this site...

Well you can always turn the proximity alerts back off... rolleyes

If you get carried away with

If you get carried away with the alerts they can become annoying. You may want to use voice alerts on your unit using wav files versus the bong alert. Here is a outline on how to do it.

a. Download the latest PoiLoader file at http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ .
b. Download Sox Exe at http://rapidshare.com:80/files/139638423/sox.zip .
c. After un-zipping Sox Exe file place it in your Garmin folder where the PoiLoader exe file is located on the computer.
d. The wav file for alerts will be named the same as the CSV or GPX file except for the extensions.
e. You can make your own wav files by going to http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php and typing in what you want it to say or use a program to convert mp3 files to wav. When using the conversion it must be saved as PCM, 44.100 kHZ., 16 bit, Mono
