Chicago is unfair, the Chicago way

I was borrowing my sister's car the other week, and I rolled 10mph to a right hand turn. Driving in the city, when trying to find an address, sometimes people get a little distracted and might not come to a absolute full stop. Well surprise surprise, in my sister's mail came a ticket from the lovely people running Chicago for a $100! Lovely. The evil redlight robot camera light does not care if you made a very minor mistake. It does not care that you were unemployed for a while and are not trying to get back on your feet. Oh well. Now, I found this website and will report every light I see!

stop your whining! You

stop your whining! You turned right on red without stopping. That's not allowed anywhere, not just Chicago. Pay the ticket, and because of the ticket, you'll be more aware of turning right on reds! So the ticket served its purpose! For that education to you, they charge you $100.

The Chicago way, or was it your way?

It's more like Burger King, not Chicago. You got it your way, and it only cost you a hundred bucks to roll through the stop. You do know people die that way right? So Pay your Sister the money.
And since your unemployed, you should be taking the bus anyway then you don't have to worry about cameras, and if you feel you have to drive keep your eyes open for cameras we need all the eyes we can get..

Maybe a good side

Catching the rolling right turn on red drivers maybe the only benefit of the red light cameras. The law say STOP and then proceed to turn right traffic permiting. I've seen way to many people just roll thru a right on red light in front of some poor unsuspecting driver who has a green light. I sometime wonder if these are the same drivers who don't understand the meaning of the YIELD sign. For pixelflight, pay your sister.

Hey the riding the bus comment is a bit harsh.
True, rolling stops on a right turn are dangerous,
As well as running red lights.
We should all be safe and courteous drivers.
As well as to our fellow bloggers.

Town removing red light camera

This was in the Chicago Tribune today!

Installing red-light cameras at busy intersections is a growth industry, but one northwest suburban community has pulled the plug on a highly profitable camera amid worries a premier shopping venue was getting a reputation as a ticket destination.

Located at Meacham and Woodfield Roads near Woodfield Mall, the camera raked in $1 million in fines for Schaumburg between November and January.

The tickets came in a flood, some 10,000 of them, almost all for drivers not stopping before turning right on red. At $100 a ticket, the village's coffers were overflowing.

But amid a flurry of complaints—some from scofflaws threatening never to shop again at the mall—the village recently decided to deactivate the camera, saying it wasn't improving safety that much anyway.

Seen That Camera In Action

A work associate of mine got nailed by the Woodfield camera. He said that he was shown a video (maybe it was a series of photos) of his car, with him clearly visible driving, rolling through the red. He said there was no other traffic, he ALMOST stopped, blah, blah... He said he did learn his lesson and is now sure to always make a "full and complete stop" as the Illinois law states. I think it ended up costing him more than $100.

I'm not sure how or where he reviewed the evidence. I'll try to find out.

No worries...

Pixelfight,
Don't take these comments too personally. It is my experience that those who represent themselves as sanctimonious are usually the worse offenders. They probably have worse driving records than you, and of course this will generate an avalanche of denials and other comments. You made a mistake; we all do. Thanks for the post and if you could submit the cooridinates for this camera it will help us all in the future. cool

Stopping for a right turn on red light...

Yes, stopping on red before making a turn is the law and a good, safe idea.

However, working in downtown Chicago, I can say that this law must not apply to the goofy Taxi's here in the city, as you never see them stop before making a turn on red. And, I have almost been smacked a couple of times while crossing the street at a green light because of this. Heck, most of the time they don't even slow down to make the turn!

Good luck with your job search pixelfight.

Come to Arizona

Pixelfight,

Come to Arizona. No one stops for right on red even in the intersections marked NO TURN ON RED. They all look to see if they can beat the traffic in the curb lane and then slow down to about 15 miles per hour so oncoming traffic has to brake for them.

People here don't even stop when crossing sidewalks, exiting alleys or shopping centers.

Drivers also seem to enjoy riding in the far left lane and sightseeing at the same time. It is no longer fun to drive in Phoenix, one has to be paying attention all the time for red light runners and flukey drivers that think they are the only vehicle on the road. Oh, and don't bother using turn signals, you might burn out a bulb or run down your battery and other drivers might be distracted by the flashing lights they so rarely see.

Welcome to the forum and good luck in finding another job.

Just like a ticket issued by

Just like a ticket issued by an unsympathetic cop, you still have the opportunity to go to court to tell a judge that you think turning right on a red without stopping is “a very minor mistake.”.

Why would I want to bite you? Chicago already did, you broke the law and they bit off 100 bucks worth,
unfortunately it's your sister they are biting not you.

Now you can take what I said as mean, however it's fact, if you had been riding the bus, you wouldn't be getting the rolling stop ticket. A bus costs $2.00, and probably no more than 3.00 and you can transfer all day on that one fare. A car has to be filled with Gas I would imagine $10.00 or more to fill, then there is always the chance your going to run across a camera and it going to get you and cost you money.

Now if thats attacking you for being unemployed well you need thicker skin to start with because thats not what I was doing, you came in this forum winning about the camera snapping your mug. and it costing you $100.00 bucks.

And since the Bus is cheaper than driving, it makes great since to use it and you yount get a red light ticket at the same time.

It's about accepting responsibility for your actions. Sometimes there are pleasant consequences and sometimes not so pleasant. In this case, it could have been much worse.

Not only does the "evil redlight camera" not care about your whining and excuses, neither does the rest of the legal system.

POI's files are not for breaking the law

The POI Files help you get a gasp on your surroundings, the files give you warnings so when you see a "long Green or dirty green if you like" you will be prepared to stop.

These cameras are popping up in all kinds of situations now, speed, red light, right turn and even to see if you rolled past the stop here on red stripe. With more to come, they are cash cows for these cash strapped cities. And I don't Agree with them even a little bit, However they are there and until they are not, I have to drive with a awareness about me.

Camera's are fix mounted, A-frame mounted and van mounted the manufactures are even working on getting them smaller so they can hide them from view.

If you think you can break the law with these GPS files YOU WILL GET TICKETS, if you use them to make yourself aware of where there are, then take the proper actions to stay with in the law you will be fine.

Absolutely, Illinois is corrupt, and Chicago too.

I am a life-long Chicagoan, I know how things run. And believe me, "something for something" or "quid pro quo" ideas and ways of forming friendships is the way I grew up. However, I can sleep at night because I never put anyone out in the cold with my friendships.

But yes, Illinois and esp. Chicago is super corrupt. The "top" people abuse their powers, and take from the less "powerful" people at the "bottom". However I know one thing the simple, honest man in Chicago can sleep at night and not wonder the next day if he is being recorded. wink

If they put speed cams on the tollways & expressways in IL they would be overloaded with tickets and wouldn't be able to proccess them all. I take I-88 every day. Posted Speed Limit is 55. Average traffic speed is 70. The left lane usually moves at 80 until you get closer to the city and then everything slows down. If we pass a cop running radar, everyone slows down to 65-70. I think 55 is too slow. But what's the point of posting a speed limit if they are not even going to get interested until you hit 20+ the limit?

Possibly you have not heard the term "funny" used as a synonym for ironic? That may have been a better word for BobDee to have used, seeing as you missed the meaning..

What is you're problem with BobDee? He is a long time member who has made many contributions to this site, and if opinionated, certainly not a simpleton, with more than likely, an above average I.Q. How can you make judgments after being a member less than a week. You seemed to have gotten on your soapbox after a comment about riding the bus, claiming that he was picking on you; and it was not BobDee who first claimed you were a whiner and I for one agreed with that post writer. As for riding the bus, for a retired or unemployed person, it is sage advise... There are no parking fees, it creates less air pollution, and it saves money.

I notice your first tirade at BobDee was eliminated as was my response, possibly these will be also.. Are you just intent on starting a verbal fight? (I see you used the word fight in your user name) If that is your intent, I'm sure BobDee will hold his own if not win... Although I too am making a judgment after seeing your ramblings in only one post.
