255W Unable to calculate route to destination

Have anyone see this message before?

The route which garmin chose is to take the toll freeway first then another 2 freeways. But I decide to take the back street to the 2nd freeway instead. After it try to get me back to the toll way 2 times but I ignore. Then the message on the garmin said that "Unable to calculate route to destination" after I hit OK, it just show the map as if I'm in "view map" mode. After I stop and chose the destination again, it able to calculate the new route successful.

This is the 2nd time I encounter this problem on the same route. I have 4.8 FW and 2009.11 map on my 255W by the way.

255 w

did u try to turn it off and restart it
I have had it keep on same path after I hit stop before

I just hit stop. Then choose

No I haven't. In fact I just hit stop. Then choose where to and pick the destination again and it show me the new route to the destination.

I just want to see if other have see this message or it's just my unit.

preferences??

maybe it has to do with your preferences?

for example, if it was trying to calculate the fastest route with u-turn avoidance set to on, maybe your diversion off the route made the GPS choke due to no possible route WHILE meeting the criteria you set. (it wanted you to get to the tollway, but couldn't do it without a u-turn)

just a thought ... I don't know if this is the "real" reason

Have you thought of not having the 255 calculate a route until you are past the toll road?

As you are going to the same destination - according to your post - several times, you probably know the route so why are you having the unit try to tell you to go one way when you are not going to follow the route it planned? Just leave it in the map mode. All you POI alerts will still show and you won't have to listen to "Let me consult my magic book."

The preferences I have is fastest route, avoid uturn, traffic, carpool lanes. After the intersection where the GPS give me the message, there are 2 more streets that can lead to the tollway entrance. Right after I hit ok and reenter the destination again, it route me to 1 of those street to get back on the toll way. I'm thinking about remove the tollway out of the avoidance to see if it still give me the message again.

The back street that I took run parallel with the tollway. The tollway in fact faster and a little shorter but during traffic hours it is back up for mile. During those hours, taking the backstreet is 2 miles longer but about 10 minutes faster.

I just got this GPS couple weeks ago so I want to see how it route me to the destination I know well and also get familar with it as this is my first GPS. That's why I just want to know if I got a defective unit or it is a normal for this model.

gotta remember

These are pretty dumb units so the indication you are getting is pretty normal. I usually leave mine in the map mode most of the time unless I need directions to a specific location. At one time my unit was trying to have me get off the freeway only to get back on again. Once I learned that, and the unit got a little smarter after an update, I usually turn the routing off when I'm on my usual routes.

One other thing you will learn - hopefully not the hard way is limit the number of alerts coming from the system. Mine currently only alerts for traffic cameras, rest areas and truck/travel plazas.

Thanks for the info!
