Question about POI alerts

Ok, so I've loaded a whole pile of custom POI's on my nuvi 760, And it worked while testing it on my way home for Tim Hortons. Now the question, do the alerts only work when you are following a route? Will they work if I just have the map up - will an alert sound as I approach a POI??? I loaded in a bunch of things like coffee shops, red light cameras, etc and wondered if I can just leave my gps on and it will give me an audible alert as I approach or do I have to keep on putting destination in as I drive so I follow a route?

You don't have to set an alert, but ...
You must set an alert for the Custom POI file when you load it if you want an alert to sound. You can run POI Loader in Manual Mode and set whatever alerts you want. Or you can put some alert information in the files themselves.
Regular POI files do not alert by default.
Check out Phil's great guide for more information about alerts.

Also, be aware that alerts will only sound if you are on the road on which the POI is located, traveling in the direction of the POI, and if the POI is located sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet).
It's important to understand how the proximity alerts work on Garmin auto units.
The alerts do NOT function as a radius, but rather they function as an "along the road/route" alert.
In order to get an alert several things must be true.
1. You must set an alert either through information in the file or via POI Loader being run in Manual Mode and an alert being manually entered.
2. Alerts must be enabled on your unit.
3. You must be traveling on the road on which the POI is located and traveling in the direction of the POI.
4. The POI must be sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet or less).
.
Just to add to MM's excellent response, if you REALLY want a radius alert you can create TourGuide files. These will alert even if you are not on the road on which the POI is located.

For Alert
. . . do I have to keep on putting destination in as I drive so I follow a route?
You do not have to set a destination if you have an alert set. However, if you don't have a destination set, even though you have a 1/2 mile alert, it won't sound until you are on the same street as the alert. So if your route involves turning on to the alert street 1 block from the alert, it won't sound until it sees you on the street and heading toward the alerted location.
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

This should have read "You don't have to set destination ..."
