is it possible to load wav or mp3 files on a garmin nuvi 205 ? no success so far loading them on to my garmin." POI loader" tells me to convert them to wav 16 bit mono. The files are already 16 bit mono.

WAV yes, mp3, useless on 205

As far as POIs are concerned the 205 does not play mp3 files, so loading them would be pointless. The 205 will play a .wav file if loaded properly with the proper version of SOX.EXE in the same directory as POIloader and if the wav file is named properly. I very strongly suggest that you make sure that "hide extensions for known file types" is disabled in Windows if you are trying to do this, otherwise you likely will not really know the names of the files.

Here is a little outline of

Here is a little outline of how to do it.

a.Download the latest PoiLoader file at http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ .
b.Download Sox Exe at http://rapidshare.com:80/files/139638423/sox.zip .
c.After un-zipping Sox Exe file place it in your Garmin folder where the PoiLoader exe file is located on the computer.
d.The wav file for alerts will be named the same as the CSV or GPX file except for the extensions.
e.You can make your own wav files by going to http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php and typing in what you want it to say or use a program to convert mp3 files to wav. When using the conversion it must be saved as PCM, 44.100 kHZ., 16 bit, Mono
