How do I get free traffic working on a 265WT ?

I have registered the unit with Garmin. I previously had the (lack of voice prompt issues) (figured it out) but I still don't get the traffic icon (2 green cars onscreen). If I have the unit connected to the car cigarette lighter cable and then I search under tools for the traffic option, it says go to garmin.com/fmtraffic and register my code???? When I go to the website it asks me if I'm using a module (other than the one I have). Of coarse the phone option is not available on the weekends.

You don't have to do

You don't have to do anything for the free fm traffic.Once you hook up the receiver you will start receiving the traffic information. If the green icons are not showing most likely you are not in a coverage zone.See http://www8.garmin.com/traffic/fm/navteq.html for locations for coverage. The icon will appear on the scren once you are in a zone.

But that's what gets me, on the first day I had the unit, the icon was there. I no longer get it. And I travel the same route everyday. I'm in Toronto and according to the coverage map, I should get something.

Where in the Toronto area

Where in the Toronto area are you?

I know that on the 401 heading East, I won't get anything until at least Erin Mills Pkwy, even though I'm in the so called area back in Milton.

401/Keele

I am currently in the 401/Keele area. I got the unit last Monday and while I was driving up a side street the traffic icon was there. I know the coverage (or at least I read it somewhere) is only available from 9am-6pm or so.

If you go to http://www.poi-factory.com/node/19870 you will see information from a user who states "For Toronto, Traffic information is only available Monday to Friday 6am to 7pm".Maybe another user for your area could verify this.

Edit. This user posted the same problem http://www.poi-factory.com/node/20697

do I register my new 265wt when there is no 265wt shown on the list when you try to register?

If you go to the Garmin site and pick register. It doesn't know what type of unit you have until you hook it up to your PC and click on the Search for Device button. That is how they determine what type of device you have. Once you register the device (if you are within 60 or so days) you may qualify for a map upgrade to 2009.11. It takes you through the downloading steps. (This takes about 3 hours to load into the Garmin). First you download the program to your PC and then into the Garmin GPSr. Good luck.

Free Traffic

I have the 265wt and as long as the traffic receiver power cable is hooked up and the 265wt recognizes the traffice receiver it should work if you are in a reception zone. I had to do nothing at all and it was not necessary to register the unit at the Garmin Web site. I registered the 265wt itself and waited a while aftr I was using the traffic receiver until I regestered it at the Garmin site to check for updates. Even if you are not in a reception zone it should come up in the settings menu and show that it is active.

Traffic icon

I had the same problem. For the first two weeks my traffic showed up everyday, then the past 4 days in no longer shows up. I'm also in Toronto . I spoke to Garmin TS they act as if they never heard of this before, but from what I see on the net it is happening quite a bit, they told me to send the unit in for repair. I'm thinking it has to do with the actual traffic towers sending out the info.

Same here

I was speaking with TS and he (nice guy) had me clear out the FM traffic buffer (hidden menu). I will check later today to see if I get any traffic data. As was said before, when I have the adapter hooked up to the 265wt I do get a menu for the traffic (under settings) I guess it is just a fm traffic problem with whomever sends out the data. I will wait for a bit.

angelfish.I tried to find

angelfish.I tried to find the post but couldn't.A while back another user had this same problem and Garmin had him to do a complete re-set on his unit. After that he got the fm traffic.I agree with you it may be just that you are not receiving the signal.

I'm Having the Same Problem

For what it's worth I'm having the same problem. For the first two months or so the Traffic Icon appeared, then in early Feb the icon is gone.

Is it possible this is an issue that this isn't a UNIT problem so much as a service problem, since it's happening to all of us around the same time?

DB

No real problem

I am in the outskirts of Philadelphia just inside the coverage area and generally have no problem any time night or day and usually get the traffic icon and can do a traffic search. However, there are times when it takes 5 minutes or so to get the traffic icon, but it always shows up.

to angelfish ... hidden traffic buffer ... menu ?

How do you access the hidden menu for clearing the traffic buffer? Thanks.

Frank, MA.

I had similar problem

On the way to work I would get the traffic updates and see them on my screen. There were a few days that were traffic was exceptionally bad due to storms, so I unplugged it from the truck and took it inside to show the boys at work how well it worked.

When I got inside the traffic info was gone.

Before I left for the day I powered it up by a window to get a good satellite reception and hopefully good FM reception, but still no traffic. Soon I gave up, hopped into my truck plugged it in, started the truck and left for the day.

I wasn't even out of the parking lot and the traffic info was back again. I had had enough and just drove home shaking my head confused.

Later that week I read here that the cord is also the FM receiver.

I also would like to know

Frank508 wrote:

Traffic towers problems

Just read that infact there is a problem with the traffic towers. A letter from Garmin was posted that the Navteq traffic tower in the Toronto area is and has been down, however there is no time frame as to when it will be up and running.

FWIW.....I don't ALWAYS get

FWIW.....I don't ALWAYS get traffic on my Nuvi660, it just might be a case of you either being out of the transmitter range or there just ISN'T and traffic data being sent out. I've gone DAYS without a single traffic alert and then it rains and POOF, there's a million of them to browse through.

I would also like to know how to access the hidden menu to clear the traffic buffer. I don't have the problem at the moment, but I would like to file this away for later retrieval if I ever need it. wink

I'd like to know,

I'd like to know if clearing the data really does anything. I've never had a traffic problem, so am hesitant to clearing the data...although, theoretically it shouldn't hurt anything....

press and hold the "moving avg" box in the "trip information page" You may have to hold for 10 seconds or so.

--
........Garmin StreetPilot c550 / Nüvi 765...........

Same thing here for me

I've been traveling to Toronto a lot as of late and no more traffic updates ever since I updated to ver 4.8 It might be entirely a coincidence, but that's when it started. I live an hour north east of Toronto and (used to) get traffic signals here.

I just emailed Garmin about it. I'll wait and see what they say.

Clearing Traffic Data

This is how I was told to do it.
First go to trip odometer screen,
then hold down on the large gauge (for a few seconds)
This will take you to some hidden menus. I was connected to my car adapter at the time so I may have had access to different menus. I tried it just now on battery power and I think I was looking at different screens.

****Note I don't know if accesing these menu's might brick your units. Try at your own risk.

for the few who are not aware

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

We have recently been informed by Navteq (your traffic provider) that
the tower that provides traffic information to the Toronto area is down.
They are working to restore service to the Toronto area. Unfortunately,
at this time we do not have a timeframe from Navteq as to when the
service will be restored. We apologize for the inconvenience and
appreciate your patience.

With Best Regards,

Hidden Menus

I really get scared using hidden menus. I think they are hidden for a reason.

Would the lack of having the traffic option working eliminate any speed signs from appearing onscreen?
I don't get these either on my unit.
