Rolling firmware on nuvi 265wt (or any 2x5W unit) back to 4.60 from 4.80 (removes EcoRoute)

I finally figured out how to do this. I'm not going to give detailed instructions but only enough information such that an advanced user should be able to figure out how to do this on their own.

Go to this site:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4105

View the page source.

Download the old region file (firmware) by changing "480" to "460" in the download link.

Follow step 3a or 3b. I used 3b.

I realize this is slightly cryptic, but I don't want to be responsible for making nuvi bricks.

The reason that I have done this is posted here:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/20658

I will post back here later when I know if this fixed the problem. FYI: this also removes EcoRoute.

And a similar problem for the 7x5 series here:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/20358

Edit: other firmwares available are 2.70, 2.80, 3.10, and 4.40

nice work...

Nice alternate method to mine and it works just as well. Please report back with your traffic problem findings and if ecoRoute (or at least the firmware that contains it) seems to be the cause.

Here's a tip if you're doing extensive testing of different firmware versions and are updating or backdating frequently:

Keep a copy of each version you'll likely be testing in the x:/Garmin folder (assuming you have the space on the nuvi drive) but rename each version to something like:

GUPDATE.GCD.250
GUPDATE.GCD.300
GUPDATE.GCD.310

The numbered extension identifies the firmware version. When you want to flash a certain version, just rename the file to remove the .xxx numerical extension to GUPDATE.GCD and that version will be flashed on the next nuvi power cycle. You do have to remember to rename the file & put the numerical extension back on to identify the firmware version though. This also lets you update/backdate when you're offline so you don't have to download/re-download the files every time. You do however need access to a PC to do the filename changing.

4.60 seems to be no good either

I test v4.60 this morning and it seems to behave the same way. Going to back date to v4.40 and try again in 1/2 hour.

Stay tuned.

GRRRRR

v4.40 doesn't seem to work either and I can't get the unit to back date to v3.10. Looks like I (we) are stuck until Garmin fixes this issue.

Problem wasn't firmware

My problem, it seems, was with the 2009.11 map update and not the firmware.

Backdate map as well?

How does one go back and forth between map versions? I too suspect this 2009.11 version is causing problems.

If you have a backup of your previous mapset (x:/Garmin/gmapprom.img), you simply copy that backup to the the nuvi in place of the new version. Keep backups of all mapsets you have (both old and new) since they could come in handy down the road.

Garmin will likely fix the problem you're having with the v2009.11 maps with a firmware update rather than roll out a new version of the maps. There were issues with the v2009.11 maps & the 7x5 series that have been corrected with the newest 7x5 v3.30 firmware.

Yeah, but.....

Ah, but then you get Ecoroute back sad

Why worry

Why worry about the ecoroute? If you don't enter any information for it, or delete the information then it does nothing.

I figured out my problem

Haunted Nuvi

My unit started giving me routes that made no sense after flashing that firmware, so I suspected it was plotting them using some kind of ecoroute algorithm even though I had entered no information.

However, now that I've reverted to the previous firmware, it is still doing it, which points the finger at the 2009.11 map which was loaded at the same time as the firmware. I just finished restoring the previous map and now the unit should be back to its original state.

If it continues to plot weird routes, I guess I'll look for an exorcist. smile All I know is it was working great until it received those two "upgrades". If it's back to normal tomorrow, then I'll certainly concede that ecoroute wasn't responsible.

No Holy Water

Just don't dunk the unit in holy water. Or it will give up the ghost. wink

Seems to be fixed

Looks like no holy water is needed. With the older map reinstalled, I did a long trip on familiar roads yesterday. I deliberately tried to confuse the unit by turning off the plotted route. I did this many times, and in every case it recovered perfectly and plotted the best way out. I am a happy camper again.

Conclusion: the wonky routes were caused by the 2009.11 map, not Ecoroute. I will think long and hard before "upgrading" this unit again.

Thanks.

Hi Dorkus

I have a 255W and would like to know where I can find a copy of firmware version 4.60.

Can you please also explain the method/steps you do when going from one version to another.

Thanking you in advance, once again !
