Ball Pivot keeps slipping

I got a nice vent mount for my Nuvi 750 to replace one whose vent progs broke, keep in mind...this is not a debate on window suction mounts, dashboard mounts, vent mounts, etc......the vent mount works for my situation.

The problem I have is this is a new vent mount, consequently, were my Nuvi 750 ball receptical fits on to the ball portion, after a while, the Nuvi keeps facing down...in other words, it's slipping/sliding down. The unit is staying on the mount with no problem...just keeps facing downwards. So I'm constantly lifting it up to face me.

Any suggestions for what I can do to create some friction there...to keep it more stable?

I don't think adding tape would work. Just looking for ideas from others.

Thanks POI team.

Stu

Try

Try putting a piece of paper towel on th ball and snap it back in this does work but don't put to much as you might break the clips on the gps and then you will have probs.

Can you return it? Sounds like the mount could possibly be defective. It could also be the connector for the GPS.

There is a metal ring surrounding the ball receptical. You can remove the ring and then tighten it. (I pushed an end up with the tip of a screwdriver and then grabbed it with pliers). Once removed, I tightened with pliers and then reinserted.

Thanks for the tip. I am having a similar problem with the Garmin suction mount. The pivot has become so loose that the GPS moves when touching an option.

paper towel trick works and is easy to do...

I've done it on numerous loose ball/socket mounts and it works great. It adds just the right amount of space to take up whatever slack is between the ball/socket and at the same time adds friction to keep them from slipping. One additional tip is to get a black permanent marker and "paint" the piece of paper towel black before inserting it between the ball/socket. This in effect "hides" the paper towel and it literally cant be seen.

Paper Towel Trick

I've got the same problem. Many thanks for the tips! I'll give the "painted" paper towel trick a try!

For security purposes, I am constantly taking my Nuvi on and off the mount. Wont the paper or will the paper come off?
Is there anything else that could provide enough minimal friction?

Thanks....the responses have been great.

Just a suggestion

Try a little plumber's putty available at Lowes etc. Just a very small amount. It should provide friction and as it does not dry out so it should last a long time.

Are you pulling the mounting bracket (the bracket the the nuvi clips onto) off of the ball-end of the socket every single time you remove it? Why not just unclip the nuvi from the mounting bracket and leave the mounting bracket/ball-end connected?

Of course the paper towel will come off every time you disconnect the ball from the socket, but the main reason for the paper towel spacer is the tighten up the ball/socket pivot joint so it doesn't move.

That's what I have always done to avoid the very problem you are experiencing.
