mp3 versus wav alerts on 765T

I found out early on by reading the posts here, that if I wanted to use the mp3 player in my 765T, and still be able to have spoken proximity alerts for some of my custom poi's, that I needed to use the wav and sox.exe approach.

If you have mp3 alerts, and are playing mp3's when the alert is triggered, the alert will attempt to play and fail, and the mp3 player will switch to the next track.

Not only is this annoying when trying to listen to music, but it completely disrupts the ability to listen to much longer format tracks such as old time radio shows, podcasts and audiobooks, whose tracks might be 30 to 60 minutes in length, and need to be listened to in the proper sequence.

And of course, you don't hear the alert that you have assigned, or at least not properly.

From those same posts, I learned that this is a glitch that has existed for some time, and that Garmin is aware of it.

Anyone know if it has been fixed with either the 2.5 or 3.0 firmware updates that were made available for the 765T?

What about for other mp3 capable nuvi's that have received recent firmware updates?

Sometimes, Garmin acts in the most peculiar way...

The Nüvi 6xx users were the first to report this bug and reported it to Garmin. Garmin responded by introducing the bug into the 3xx series as well!

I didn't realise they'd decided to deploy this bug on all new models... sad

that has been my experience

can other owners of the newer mp3 capable models confirm that the glitch still exists?

I know that Gary Hayman has added a section to his site about the 7X5 series...Gary can you confirm?

Using wav files for alerts is good to know. I'll have to give them a try. Maybe my 350 will work better.

I have Nuvi 760 but i have not noticed this issue at all. I always play MP3s in my car and have setup MP3 alerts but no problems. It doe not skip to next track when there is an alert.

Re: Mp3 Versus Wav Alerts...

Hi jim8650,

That .mp3 skipping problem, has been an issue for quite a while now and I don't know why Garmin hasn't addressed it...yet.

I use .wav files for all my alerts and, in doing so, have eliminated the ".mp3 skipping problem" when the alerts play.

Keep in mind, if you're using .wav files on your unit, instead of .mp3 files for your alerts, they must be encoded "mono" and not "stereo" in order for them to work. My .wav files are mono, 44100Hz and 16 bit.

HTH (hope that helps)

If Garmin has propogated this to other models, then it has moved from the realm of BUG to Feature as everyone in the software industry knows there is no such things as "Bugs." They are "undocumented features."

I believe the expression is
"non-positive, undocumented features" wink

my favorite

My favorite nuvi "undocumented feature" is the one that they "added" to all nuvis after the 3xx/6xx series that will never let you know when the battery charge cycle has completed...this is such a useful "feature" that I refuse to buy a nuvi that does not include it. rolleyes

Jim,

I don't listen to .mp3 music while driving as my 8-Track player still functions well enough. wink

Actually I don't have any .mp3 songs in my nüvi -- only .mp3 alerts (I don't use the device as an .mp3 player), so I haven't tested the problem of .mp3 skipping when alerts are supposed to sound that some are experiencing causing them to switch to .wav alerts and the use 'sox.exe' (if they select the proper version).

It will probably be an item I tackle for a future article on the GARMIN TRICKS, TIPS, ETC. Web site. I'll have to put it in the queue for articles that I am researching and testing.

BTW -- The 7/8X5 area is growing. Drop by and take a look. I just finished an EcoRoute area and I may approach 'Traffic' next.

I check your site regularly, and recommend it to others, especially those that are new to nuvis.

Your ecoRoute article was very helpful.

Looking forward to an article on traffic, as I have not adopted a fulltime approach yet, as to whether I want to enable traffic in my avoidances, and trust "Jill" to route me around it on her own, or uncheck, and manually hit avoid, if I want to alter my route.

Around the metro Pittsburgh area, and especially my daily commute, I pretty much decide about traffic on my own. But if I were to be in an area that I was not familiar with, I would probably enable it in the avoidances.

And speaking of traffic, I am now almost completely oblivious to the ads that pop up with the free lifetime Navteq traffic...I thought I would hate that.
