I know you asked for non-chain Mexican restaurants

I know you asked for non-Chain Mexican restaurants but I can't help but list a few of my favorites and you can decide if you think it is a chain or not.

http://www.prosranch.com/departments.aspx

Pro's Ranch Markets has one of the finest “Las Cocinas” I have been in this side of the border. Many specialties, some of which I have only seen in Mexico and ordered from a line then you sit at picnic tables to eat.

The attached restaurant to Pro's Ranch Market is
Tradiciones
1602 E Roosevelt,
Phoenix, Arizona
-112.0247 33.2734
Tradiciones is an exceptional non-chain that serves Carne Asada and other grilled specialties along with traditional Mexican fare.

There is one other non-chain I recommend called:
Rito's Market and Take Out
907 N 14th St
Phoenix, AZ 85006
-112.0307 33.2728
The downside to Rito's or maybe it is a positive is that the hours and menu are extremely limited. Rito's only has about four or five items on the menu and only serves from about 11:00am until about 1:30 or 2:00pm weekdays.

The business crowd from the city and state offices in Phoenix frequent the place for lunch and it is crowded but moves well. The only place to sit is outside on picnic tables, but well worth the trip and wait. The Green Chili Burrito is absolutely wonderful. I have never had one anywhere else to match the quality and taste and I have been to so many Mexican places both North and South of the border and none can match this burrito.

Hi Vegasbound, I guess I

Hi Vegasbound,

I guess I consider "chain" to be Taco Bell, Pepe, ChiChi's, etc.

Your suggestions are perfect and I will add them.

Local or reginal chains work for me!!!

On a recent Phoenix/Tuscon trip my brothers and I decided mexican food was our menu of choice for the entire week. Out came the gps. We picked several nearby non chain restuarants each meal, driving past those looking like a shed or having poor patron turn-out. Had some amazingly good food. Wish I had saved to locations.

Had a great time in Arizona.

Sounds good to me.

Pretty mild for mexican food, but it's the pacific northwest.

Is this going to turn into a big project??

The Nuvis already have what I'd describe as a fairly decent Mexican (and Spanish) sub section in the food POI. I'm fairly certain the places we prefer are all listed there...

You could say that about a lot of the POI files here!!

I also look at these POI files as recommendations by users. I would rather go to a place listed from a custom POI than one from the unit.

So don't worry about it, I will create/maintain it. You can choose, if you want, to download it or not.

I love it!

Every time I travel, I'd rather go to a local, unique, one-of-a-kind place than any chain that I can go to near my house. That applies not just to Mexican, but any kind of food. Even if the food isn't any better than 3 Margaritas, Olive Garden, or Red Lobster, there's something different that adds to a nice experience.

Last time I was in Maine, I searched for a locally owned and operated lobster place. mrgreen

Chi Chi’s and El Torito

Chi Chi’s and El Torito exited our local area long ago This seems to have paved the way for new Mexican restaurants. This cuisine seems to be popular regardless of the season or location - - Mexican is always a big favorite in my area judging by the crowds at these establishments.

Here’s a small “chain” in our area consisting of 13 locations. We like this place as the food is decent and we don’t have to ride far. Quite popular and predictable.

We visited this gem last year while in Tucson. We liked it best of all the places we sampled during our visit. Of note were the hand prepared salsa (WOW !!!!) and great margaritas. This is a busy and popular spot -- we barely got in the evening we visited. We’ll certainly return on our next trip to AZ. We really had a great meal there, quite a memorable experience.

I never go to L.A. without visiting this location. It’s probably our all- time favorite Mexican inside the USA. You’ll feel like you’re being welcomed into somebody’s home. It’s a quieter dining experience and there are no menus. The wait staff ask what you like and bring out several courses. I think this cuisine is a bit more representative of what you’d find in Mexico versus the Tex-Mex most are familiar with in the USA.

Santa Maria, CA

Thanks. This is a great idea!

California's Central Coast is packed with excellent Mexican restaurants. Here's a couple of our favorites:

Casa Manana serves traditional Mexican meals and has been family owned and operated for over 25 years. Most combination dinners range between $6 and $9. The place is small so a long wait can be expected on Friday or Saturday evenings. Note: No credit cards accepted. Cash or checks only.

Lo Mejor de Jalisco serves authentic cuisine from the Jalisco region of Mexico. The restaurant is clean and the food is great. This is another small restaurant so Fridays or Saturdays can get crowded and loud; especially when the Mariachi band shows up! You'll find a large selection of seafood selections along with traditional Mexican fare. We love everything we've tried here. Credit cards accepted.
