Cheap ugly looking power cords

Most GPS units these days have a longer than necessary power cord (that won't remain straight) consisting of butt ugly cheap black vinyl except for the good looking taunt power cord/FM traffic that comes with the Nuvi 265WT.

.

I really don't mind the cord being too long as I can simply roll up the excess, tie it off with a zip-tie or black twist-tie and tuck it under the dash or behind some trim somewhere in the car. I would have a big problem though if it was too short as it would limit where I could install the unit. A simple way to get rid of the kinks in the cord is to bend the kink in the opposite direction...works fine for me.

Ah, er, not when my GPS is installed on the left side of my dash (left of the steering wheel) in my Silverado 2500HD Crew cab.

What do you want?

Should Garmin should have vehicle-specific, location-specific (on dash, on windshield high, on windshielf low) power cords?

And as for ugly ... do you think Garmin should offer designer power cords ... in matching color combinations for various vehicle interiors? Maybe a leopard-print power cord?

Come on ... a power cord is a power cord ... and what is "too long" for your compact car is just barely long enough for my crew cab pick-up. I also know a lot of guys who use the GPS's in their semi tractor trailer rigs

You know, you also have the option of running the GPS on battery power. (I can't because I'm often running 12-14 hours a day)

Make Your Own!

Rather than complain, do something about it...Make your own!

Back 'in the day' we made our own cords all the time for early Garmins that had a proprietary plug. I still have one of my old 'creations' that included the GPS power plug plus a serial connector (remember those?) for the computer and power plug for all of it on the other end, all homebuilt.

To help you there's a website called pfranc ( http://www.pfranc.com/ ) where you can purchase Garmin connectors and power cords. Have at it!

Cheers wink

Ahh, such fun! Map transfers via serial interface was my favorite, especially when you got an error near the end of the transfer and you had to start it all over again! rolleyes

Maybe we could all let Garmin know how long we want our power cord and what coordinating color and material would go with the interior of the car. That way they could raise the price by about $75. The same theory could be used for cell phone cords and home electronics..DUH!!!!!

Ah, another pioneer. Like you, I recall starting map uploads when I went to bed at night hoping by the time I got up eight hours later it'd be finished without errors (usually involving running out of memory). Some other time we can talk about the Garmin proprietary memory chips that required a second mortgage to buy wink

Garmin 128 MB (megabyte) Data Card for only $89.99

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=685

I remember when they were 3-4 times (maybe more) that price.

hidden

I have installed all of my gps's so that the cord is hidden it is easy to do if you know how the plastic in the dash comes off.

Sleeving

If you REALLY don't like the black cord you can always wrap the cord in colored sleeving. Something like this http://cableorganizer.com/braided-sleeving/

Cords

Don't we have anything better to discuss than the color and material of the cords?????

While we are at it...

For the price you have to pay for an official Garmin replacement cord, they could put a little color in the plugs as well. I suggest green to remind you of how much it will cost you to replace that damaged cord.
