Looking to upgrade

I'm looking to upgrade from my Nuvi 200 and am looking at several units. Each has good points and bad points.

Nuvi 255W. Added several nice features but no multistop route planning.

Nuvi 755. Added route planning and has every feature I rally want but is high priced. Free traffic lifetime is nice since I like to travel.

Magellan 4250. Has multistop route planning but does not allow to add via points to trip.

Magellan 4350. Very nice unit, has practically every feature I want but does not allow you to add custom POI. On sale right now for good price.

Any comments on these units. Right now I have the Nuvi 200.

Have you looked at the Nuvi 750? Costco has it online for $199. A great buy...

Try 760

They are all good ,,I guess it would depend on what you want out of a GPS and how much you want to pay.

Sometime we are offered to many choices I have 3- 760's and they work really good and they only cost $250.00 at costco

I overlooked the 750, I'll look it over in detail after work. It seems to have most of what I want. multi-destination routing, route review, speed limit, and a few things.

I want multi-destination routing to avoid certain routes or areas I know to be weird.

this may be the unit for me.

750 / 760 / 770

I do not know how much longer these will be in production, but my guess would be they are finished by 2010. That is not a problem for me, but some folks want the "latest." I think for the price right now they are the best on the market. It is easy to upload routes from mapsource, but you have to go to MyData on the 7xx model to load the data. I didn't realize it at first - and wasted lots of time I didn't have - so I had to do it by hand. But it worked GREAT.

Look at the price of the 770 (Europe). It has more internal storage space than the 750/760 and may be the same money. You just have to look.

nuvi 760?

I highly recommend the 760 with the traffic reports. Recently, I have had them save me a ton of extra driving around the DC-area. The traffic receiver is included with the 760, but they only give you a 3-month subscription to the service. You can upgrade it to lifetime for $60, which is so worth it if you are in a well-covered area.

I absolutely love the 7X0-series. I'm not sure how I feel about the 7X5 series, however. They have a prettier User Interface but the other functions are the same so the operations are actually a bit slower. Frankly, I couldn't ask for anything more from my 760 other than a user-replaceable battery.

Well, I live hundreds of

Well, I live hundreds of miles from the coverage area of either traffic system so that would not be that big of a deal to me. The 750 does look promising. The Magellan 4350 has several really nice features not available on Garmin and is affordable, or at least on sale right now. I just have problems with the no custom POI issue. Why Magellan would make a unit and not allow custom POI's is beyond me.

I am guessing that the 750, with multi-destination routing and media player, allows good guided tour uploads. Is that correct?

I would wait and see on the Magellan units

I would wait and see on the Magellan units. MiTAC, the parent Company of Mio, just bought out Magellan and they are supposed to be making an announcement at CES 2009 this week on how the product line of both will be changing.

It is kind of hard to find

It is kind of hard to find the 750. There is no costco near me and the only place I find it online is Amazon.com. Walmart sells the 760 but not the 750. I'm worried that the maps will not be up to date.

Maps

I was able to buy my 760 from www.buydig.com. It came with 2008 maps, and when I registered (you can look at my post on how to register without updating your firmware) I downloaded the newest map for free. You should be able to use www.bizrate.com and see other retailers that sell the 750.

Make sure and check out http://www.resellerratings.com so that you don't have a headache.

Magellan vs. Garmin

I just looked at the magellan 4350. It seems like it has all that the Garmin nuvi has but is way cheaper. Plus it is hooked up with AAA maps.
Can someone tell me why the Garmin is still better.
Thanks.

Me personally

This is a personal opinion, and others may disagree. I have not owned a Magellan, but a friend does. It works fine, but is old (black and white, regional maps). Anyway, they just got sold to Mio. They have a history of providing poor support (all calls go to India). For now Garmin still has a call center in Olathe. They still seem to remember it is important to take care of problems and at least you can understand what they are saying.

I like the Garmin interface and the units do what I need. Others like the Magellan for the same reason. That is ok, as long as they get you from A to B. I do not think that their poi loading system is as easy or nice, but that is again my opinion.

I would wait and see what Mio is going to do before buying any.

Add 265WT on your list... Buy it at CircuitCity with AAA discount of 8%.

From your list, Magellan 4250/4350 is a good choice if you have AAA membership. About other Nuvi's, if you are not looking for the features they provide, stick to 265WT.

My 2cents. Happy researching!!! smile smile

I vote for the Nuvi 750

I got the Nuvi 750 for Christmas and I love it. It works out of the box, plus I've had a blast customizing it. I'm amazed that it shows the speed limit on many roads. Today I noticed that the speed limit changed exactly where the sign was. I upgraded to the 4.6 software and haven't had any problems except that the boot up time is longer sometimes. But I didn't have it long enough to know if it's the new software, or if it's always like that. The processor is so much faster than my old Streetpilot III. This recalculates in almost a blink of an eye, the other would sometimes take two or three minutes. I got it at Sam's Club for $199

This is odd! I'm comparing

This is odd!

I'm comparing the 750 to the 760 ($50 difference at Amazon.com). the primary difference is the 760 comes with the traffic antenna. While Garmin's web site does not list any cities near my location, Clear channel's site list two cities that I drive in often. But when you click on the link to see city coverage (time of operation and station list), both show a coverage in green but both also say:

Hours of Operation: Coming SOON!
Radio Station List: NOT YET A BROADCAST MARKET

Does this map show expected coverage when they get into the market or is a station in a nearby city providing coverage for the area through a remote antenna?

Is anyone here from the Savannah, GA or the Augusta, Ga area who can confirm coverage?

Also, if I have the antenna attached without starting the trial subscription, will it show the availability of the signal?

Trial

As I understand it, as soon as the cord picks up a signal your trial will begin.

The 760 also comes with bluetooth.

I emailed the service

I emailed the service provider about traffic service in my area. at this time service is NOT offered in those areas due to "complications with the transmitter", but they anticipate coverage soon as the issue is resolved.

Remanufactured units on eBay...

While some think it's taking a big chance, the units I've purchased on eBay (660 and 680s) are all running just fine. Garmin warrantees them for a year. You can save a lot of money over new units if you're willing to take the chance (and I haven't found it to be a problem).

Just checked the Costco website and they still have the 750 for $199. If you buy one from Costco it should have the current map...if not Garmin will take care of you...

I've pretty much decided on

I've pretty much decided on the nuvi 760. while I don't live in a town with traffic service, I live near two that will soon and also plan on expanding my travels, so buying the 760 with the antenna will be a good deal. I'll wait to activate it.

Hold your thought

If I were you I sure would wait for The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) ends and wait for roll outs.

These are tough times for the industry as in any consumer manufacturing. Competition is going to be rough and there will be adjustments in ranking in the big three of the GPS companies. Be a wise shopper and get the most for your money, no need to be brand loyal and if you feel you need to be loyal bring your own KY lube.

You know the features you want, do some research, shop and find them at the absolute lowest price you can find, no matter who makes it. Then every two years sell the unit for the price of a map upgrade to someone, then add the rest of the money and buy new technology with new maps and stay ahead of the game.

Don't let Brand Loyalty get in your way, if they cared about you they wouldn't obsolete your product before you get it home.

Nuvi 750

Sam's Clubs also have the Nuvi 750 for under $200.

I just bought the 750 over the holidays, and really like it. It has some of the higher end functions, without bluetooth or traffic updates.

I am not really loyal to any

I am not really loyal to any one company, I have owned or worked with all three of the main GPS companies. My first exposure was with the Magellan Roadmate in a hertz rental car. Next I used TOMTOM GPS software on my PDA and finally bought a Nuvi 200.

All things being equal, the one I would prefer is Magellan, mainly becasue I like their quickspell system. However, magellan only recently added the ability to add a via point to a route (4350), until then, you can to cancel the route to navigate somewhere else. The 4350 adds this but they took away custom POI's. ONe feature the 4350 has that is real nice is it calculates three routes for you to choose from.

The 750/760 does practiclaly everthing I want. The only problem point has a work around
