Flat 90 deg USB connector

Has anybody ever come up with, or seen, a flat 90 deg mini usb connector that could be used with the Nuvi power cable?

I have a 255W, which has the connection on the back. It is a compact enough unit that it could be ideally mounted with velcro to areas of many dashboards, such as over the radio faceplate, except for the fact that the supplied power cable needs about an inch or more clearance in the back to plug it in. This makes a flush mount with velcro virtually impossible.

I have it set up so that I can mount it like this on the dash, but only operating on battery power. It just is a pain to have to recharge it all the time.

Looks like what I am looking for, BUT, with it would have to be mini USB instead uf USB 2.0, which is what Nuvi uses for it's power connection.

Thanks, though.

90 degree flat mini usb

I do not think you are going to come up with one that takes up less space than the one that came with the unit. The one that comes with the 205w is a 90 degree mini and it only protrudes 9/16" from the back of the unit. I do not think it is feasible to build one that takes up less space and is still durable. There needs to be support for the insertion and removal of the cable from the unit and making it totally flat does not give the support surface needed.

I agree

You are right that it needs to be durable and has to be able to stand up to repeated conections and disconnections, but it would be nice to have something with a lower profile.

9/16" doesn't sound like much, but on a unit this small, and from a flat surface, it probably sets the unit at about a 45 deg angle off plane. This makes it dificult to view and not nearly as stable.

Radio Shack USB 3-D Swivel Adapter

This is at Radio Shack, but I don't think it would help out in this case.

No help, but THANKS for the link

Thanks for looking.

I will keep trying.

?

What about a sheet of 9/16" black styrofoam with a hole in it for the cable? Then put the velcro on the foam. If the car is an old beater, you could even drill a hole in the dash

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Here's one....

This might work for you; its a 90 Degree mini USB connector used on cell phones:

(you might want to check out a few local cell-phone kiosks/stores where they sell accessories).

It still might be a little too deep, but it looks shorter than the standard power cord. The standard cord would just plug right into it.

If that doesn't do it for you, you can always go to an electronics store or a Radio Shack and buy the connectors and some wires and make your own ...if you are only using it for power...there are only two wires to connect (+12 volts & Ground)

Good luck.

Buy the Garmin mount for the 350

My 350 suction mount had a right-angle mini-USB connector. The power cable plugs into the back of the cradle and the cord has a 90 degree bend and hangs straight down. You can just barely make it out from the photo if you enlarge it:

Good Idea!

I went to Best Buy and did not even have to buy the whole cradle. They had a Garmin replacement power cord that had the same mini plug as in the link you gave me. It has a very low profile (less than 1/4 inch) and a sturdy 90 deg elbow so the power cord lays flat against the back of the unit. I think this is about as good as I will get. $29.95, which is not really cheap, but it not as much as I expected a solution would be, and it is not a bad idea to have a backup power cable anyway.
