I just picked up the Garmin 200 Nüvi for $97 at Walmart on Black Friday (today). So far I love it! Only thing is, it didn't come preloaded with speed alerts, that kind of stinks. I tend to have a led. At first I didn't like the the whole vehicle thing. But once I seen that I can change it to the 3D Arrow. I was ok with it. So I went on to the site and look at more of the vehicles, I changed my opinion. I'm going to try the knuckels and deadend. I'm also going to try the Dr. Nightmare voice. I'm going to try to use this for a bit of geocaching type stuff. I know it's not meant for it, but I'll get a general idea where I am, was, and need to be when I'm in the middle of the woods.

Eh, so far I like what I got. I originally bought it for my trip to New York next year. Then I found how much other stuff I can customize and mess with.
Garmin 200 is a good choice
It is a good basic GPS. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but it will get you from point A to point B.

I also bought the nuvi 200.
I also bought the nuvi 200. I wanted to upgrade form the c330 that I use to locate customers address for work. And I would like to learn to use it to remind me of the 200 Speed cameras that are going up around the Phoenix area. So I might need some help with that later.

I Like it too...
I bought the same special and I love it so far. It's all I need right now. I don't travel a whole lot but it's nice to know I have it when I do. Hope you enjoy yours.
I love it..
I have the Nuvi 200 and just love it. I'll put it through a real test as we drive from Florida to Indiana for x-mas. I bought my mom the Walmart special Nuvi 200 for x-mas gift, hope she loves it too.

Can anyone tell me about adding a SD memory chip...
Will it allow more POI storage or is it more for adding maps?
Is it possible to add the POI or map directly from the computer to the chip or does the gps have to be plugged into the computer with the chip in it?
Sorry, I am new to this
Thanks
David
My mom bought the Nuvi 200
My mom bought the Nuvi 200 from Sam's Club on Black Friday. It accepts Micro SD cards although I haven't tested it yet.
My 265WT uses regular SD cards and it appears as 2 mass-storage drives to windows, 2 drive letters. All I tested was the jpeg slide shows.

There are some things that must be installed in the unit, others can go on the memory card. Putting your custom POI files on the memory card is just one of the possible uses. My memory card has the entire vehicle file from the Garmin Garage and backups of the voices, text, and help files I eliminated from the unit itself.

I see the card as a storage
I see the card as a storage device and the files on the nuvi 200 and some preloaded pics...not sure what to look for for the POI files?
David
OK I found the POI file
Does the same file contain the Favorites, Recent Found, and Home POI`s???
I have some gray hair now, so I might be a little slow at first...LOL
Thanks

You have to download the csv files to your computer and then use the poi loader (software from Garmin) to load them on your nuvi. It will show up under Where To/Extras/custom pois.

Nuvi 200 from Wal-Mart
I bought the 200 from Wal-Mart on Black Friday.
I compared the 205 and the 200 on Garmin's web site before I bought the 200. To my surprise the 200 has all the bells and whistles that the 205 has. Micro SD slot, turn direction arrow, snapshot etc. Did Garmin update the 200 or are they mislabeled? Anyway I love it. Now all I have to do is wait for Christmas to open it again.LOL
Regular SD card, not Micro SD

Unless Garmin made a design change it is a regular SD card, not a Micro SD card. At least it is a regular SD card on my 200W.

Yep.. it's an SD in the 200.
My nuvi 200 also has a micro
My nuvi 200 also has a micro SD slot and I just bought a pair of cards because my phone uses the same card. I think that I should be able to see the photos from my phone on my gps
My bro in law has the same nuvi 200, but his takes the standard SD card.

Per chance are you using the Micro SD cards with the larger (standard SD size) adapter than usually comes with the Micro cards? Nowhere in the specs for the 200 on the Garmin site do I see anything about Micro SD cards. My MP3 player uses Micro SD cards and they sure seem flimsy and easily breakable - but the player is too small for a standard SD slot.
Edit: I did some additional Googleing on "nuvi 200 with micro SD" and there appears to be a maverick unit out there (Blue color) that Walmart is selling with the Micro SD card slot. Sure hope that is not the wave of the future for Garmin. Those little Micro cards look flimsy and can blow away with a sneeze.

I Got A Nuvi 200 at Sam's Also
I couldn't decide what Santa should bring me for the last $100. I saw a Nuvi 200 at Sears for $130, but my Wife said I was crazy, since I already have four others. I begrudgingly had to agree. We went to Sam's and my Wife pointed to a package stuck underneath way back under a shelf. It was a Nuvi 200 and I just had to check the price because there was no displays anywhere. It checked out to be $97, so since I am gps crazy, I had to have it. It must had been a lost remnant of the Black Friday sale.
I explained that an update for our C330 would be $70, so why not pay $27 more and get a new unit? Well since she was the one that found it, she couldn't really say much, just made fun of my compulsion. She did say I had to wait until Christmas...I'll just play with the other ones until then.

Micro vs. regular size SD
I have a new 260 which also has a micro slot. It also has the turn indicator and other updates. I contacted Garmin about something else and mentioned these “updates” and Garmin confirmed that they have made some changes to the units.
What it appears to me is Garmin is building a few standard units with the same features but with the features “turned off”. For example I mentioned to Garmin that my 260 appears to have traffic capability. On the phone they said that this feature wasn’t available in the 260. But later in an email Garmin said that traffic was available with the receiver. I don’t have a receiver so I can check it out. I also saw over at GPS Passion someone with a 260 who claims that his computer picked up on the Bluetooth capability of his GPS.
So the short answer is the later units have some feature changes.
nice deal! i've gotten the
nice deal! i've gotten the same one a month earlier and it was much more expensive. :[ haha

A ton of great information. Hope this helps too!
wide nuvi = standard SD
... Mine has a MICRO slot.... So, I guess there has been some change or variance...
AFAIK the rule us 3.5 nuvi = micro SD , wide nuvi = standard SD. I did a fair ammount of shopping before I bought mine and that was the case with all current inventory that I looked at.
POIs can go on SD
Can anyone tell me about adding a SD memory chip...Will it allow more POI storage or is it more for adding maps?...
sd card can hold extra custom POIs. If you put them there (with the POIinstall software) the nuvi will ask if you want to copy to internal memory every time you power up, but can run them from the SD card if you don't do the copy. Also handy if you want to store a lot of jpg photos.
Micro SD
AFAIK the rule us 3.5 nuvi = micro SD , wide nuvi = standard SD. I did a fair ammount of shopping before I bought mine and that was the case with all current inventory that I looked at.
Anyone have any idea when Garmin made that change? My Nuvi 200 has an SD slot which worked out fine as I have them laying around. A micro SD slot would have resulted in having to buy one more thing.
Nuvi 200W memory
Another question from a new owner on memory. I just got the 200W and went on Garmin's site for updates. The "firmware" was updated to 2.90, if I remember correctly, without problems. However, the free maps update downloaded to my pc OK, but fails to load to the Nuvi with the message "you need another 37 megabytes of memory to install the maps" (I paraphrased that). The only memory card I have lying around is a 128 meg micro SD with SD adapter originally from my Garmin 60 CSx trail GPS, so I installed it in the Nuvi and it was recognized by Windows, but the install failed with the same message. Any thoughts on SD, micro SD and internal Nuvi memory?
BTW, this is a great site and the info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Nuvi 255 or 260.
A good comparison chart is here: http://gpstracklog.typepad.com/gps_comparisons/garmin-nuvi-c...
Think about this!
I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 200w from West Marine for 119.00 last month. They don't say street names, however it displays the street names where to turn at the top of the screen. Extra money for a GPS to say the street name is not important to me.
I prefer seeing the steet names listed on the screen.

re: Think About This!
I thought about it, and I believe the extra money is worth it. To me Text-To-Speech is the most valuable extra there is, but I realize some people may feel fine without it.
Cheers.
My two cents
My first GPS a garmin C330. I think the sound and instructions without tts that came out of that little unit were loud and clear. Not so robotic sounding like todays models. Just darn clear no matter how loud you raised the volume. Again, just my two cents.

Yep, we thought about it, and for us the voice is an absolute must. There are occasions when I don't want to take the time to glance at the display so the voice takes care of the directions. Just our spin on things...
I really want one that says
I really want one that says the street names but i dont know what to do with the one i have now (200), if i ever do decide to upgrade. Best Buy has the 260w, i think, on sale...

I sold mine
I sold my 200 for $100 and bought a 255 for $188, costing me only slightly more than the map update.

Sometime it's nice to know how to spell a particular street name. I guess some of the more costly Nuvi's do both text and voice on where to turn. Don't know.

The 200 seems like a good basic unit. Anyone know which garmin is suppose to be a replacement for the nuvi 350?
