Multiple Custom POI files

I discovered that I can have multiple POIs in my nuvi 205W. They are listed as menu choices in the unit when viewing the custom POI screen. I checked around the forums here and don't see this method detailed so here goes:

Using POI Loader, upload an individual POI file to your Garmin unit. Browse to this newly uploaded file in File Manager and rename it. For instance, if you have a file of Days Inn motels, change the name to DaysInn.gpi. Choose another local CSV file and, using POI Loader, upload it. For instance, this may be a file of Hilton hotels. After uploading, browse to this file in your Garmin unit and rename it to HiltonHotels.gpi. You can continue this process for more POI files. When you're done, your Garmin unit will display each of these files individually, allowing you to select them, under your Custom POI folder in your GPS.

Organizing Custom POI

Actually it has been discussed here before. Your method requires a bit more work to update than creating subfolders holding the poi information in the folder you point POI Loader to.

Create a folder on your computer and then create subfolders under it. Example:

Custom POI
Hotels
Hilton.CSV
Hilton.BMP
Hilton.MP3
Marriott.CSV
Marriott.BMP
Marriott.MP3
Holiday_Inn.CSV
Holiday_Inn.MP3
Holiday_Inn.BMP
Food
Cracker_Barrel.CSV
Cracker_Barrel.BMP
Cracker_Barrel.MP3
Rest Areas & Cameras
Rest_Areas_Combined.CSV
Rest_Areas_Combined.BMP
Rest_Areas_Combined.MP3
Speed_Cameras.CSV
Speed_Cameras.BMP
Speed_Cameras.MP3
Red_Light_Cameras.CSV

Well, you get the idea.

And no, you can't put a folder in to hold one brand of hotels under the hotels folder and one for still another brand. POI Loader only reads the first subfolder (at least that's been my experience.)

This makes updating easier as you only need to replace the .CSV file in the subfolder and then reload them all. No renaming and taking the chance of renaming or deleting a file needed for operation as everything is done without me having to go into the unit.

Renaming POI.GPI Etc

Which method you use seems to be a matter of personal preference. Each one has its perceived advantages and disadvantages. I find the renaming method simpler and easier for me to use and to organize, but I can see why others prefer the omnibus method. You can actually use a combination of both methods. If you do a search you will find lots on this topic. Here's two:

RE: Multiple Custom POI files

Well, I knew if I built it they would come....wait, that was something else. I knew it had to be out there somewhere, but couldn't find it doing search. I got everything but! I like the idea of multiple folders, but suspected that I couldn't go deeper than one level - apparently you can go two levels deep. I'll give it a shot. My apologies for the repeat information. Back to creating my POI files! Thanks everyone!
