Nuvi 760 Firmware version 4.5

I'm torn between the nuvi760 and the 265wt. I like the added features of the 760 but the cleaner look of the map screen on the 265wt. I called Garmin support and asked then a few questions and when it came to this topic, the agent told me that they don't expect an update to the 760 firmware to be available that updates the "skin" as it's called but that there are some units that ship with a version 4.5 installed. I asked her if there was any way to find one of those units and she didn't know of any. Has anyone heard of anything like this? I can't find reference to this version anywhere.

Also on a firmware note, my unit has v.4.3 installed but the newest version on Garmin's site is 4.2. Does anyone understand how that makes sense?

I also have to comment that Garmin's tech support (in my limited experience so far) is among the best. They remind me of the early Tivo days for those of you who have had that experience.

Anyone with insight into the firmware versions for the 760, please let us all know what you know.

some 4.5s are out there...

GPSreview.net has some examples of the 750/760 with the version 4.5 software - costco had some I believe...

Would be interested to know the differences between 4.5 and 4.2

Yep, Costco has them. From

Yep, Costco has them.
From what I understand, the multi-routing bug hasn't been fixed in the 4.5 version either.

4.2

4.5 isn't publicly released yet. 4.2 is the latest release.

How can you find a nuvi 760 with version 4.5 firmware?

Lothario wrote:

I've been to the two Costco stores in the Cincinnati area and both units that the sales associates let me open and check the version of were v4.1. Any idea which stores have the 4.5 units? Any experience with units from Costco.com or anywhere else?

Also, any insight into why Garmin would make this such a scavenger hunt? If there are nuvi 760 units out there with v4.5 does that indicate that Garmin will make v4.5 or another version with the updated skin available as a firmware download? I don't have experience with Garmin's track record in this area so I'm asking.

Thanks!

The 7x0's UI will not be updated with a new "skin". Garmin simply does not add new features to old units. To get the new features, users must purchase an "upgrade" (AKA "new unit"). Sadly, that has been their track record.

MM,

You're spending a lot of time and fuel on the proverbial wild goose chase. If the 760 offers the features you want just buy one. When you register the unit with Garmin it will automatically be updated with the latest available firmware download (4.20 at the moment) unless the unit is mysteriously loaded with a later version. Updates frequently jump a bunch of points so while 4.2 is the current download the next could easily be 4.6 or higher.

Garmin is 'very' good at providing updates, even for units no longer sold (notice there's a new firmware update for the 660 this week). I'm sure this forum will provide a heads up when updates are posted but you can check "My Garmin" (free account you set up when registering) periodically to see if updates have been issued. There's also an e-mail notification offered by Garmin but it's never worked for me.

Cheers wink

Not in any hurry........

After the last debacle with a lousy firmware update I'm not in any rush to get a new version. If there really is a version 4.5 out there I'd have to wait and see how it works out for folks. I have no desire to repeat the experience of updating to a new firmware version that breaks my 760.

Thanks!

The Costco at Arundel Mills here in MD has(had?) a unit that I personally tested 2 weeks ago.
I'm not sure if that's the only unit/store there that had it, and I'm not sure what update or fixes are present going from 4.2>>4.5, but what's clear though is that the routing bug still hasn't been fixed.

I second this.

Garmin sometimes updates older units with newer features for example when the 800 series came out with "enhanced MSN" about a month later they provided that feature in an update for the 700 series but not to 600 series users

Here's to hoping it's released soon

And that it fixes the slow startup problem that began when I updated to 4.2. It's frustrating when I know that before I updated it was booted and ready in a few seconds. Now it seems to take a minute or more sometimes. I've deleted the log as suggested elsewhere on the site, and that doesn't appear to correct the problem. In fact, it seems to be completely random.

I've found myself keeping it powered on when turning off the car when I know I'm only going to be away for a few minutes. I've found that saves me at least some time.

Thanks for Feedback AND a Couple Questions for Zurk

Thanks everyone for your feedback/input/thoughts. This is a great community of GPS enthusists!

Just a couple comments in reply:
- I do like the 760 I have but since I've gotten a look new 265wt "skin", I miss the look and placement of the data on the map page and was hoping to have that too on the 760 (which is what the Garmin rep told me was available on some units)... I know, I know the old cake eating addage smile

Zurk,

I have all the basic questions but here are just a couple for now:
1. Where/how did you get it? And are there more available?
2. Does it have an updated skin and does it look more like the new 2x5 units?
3. Does it introduce any new bugs or issues that you have found?

Thanks in advance!

.

I have a 750 with 4.5. At times it take s over a minute to boot...loading maps. Other times it takes a few seconds. I haven't come across any problems with it. I used to be able to export routes to my 760 and they would be as I made them. This 750 seems to want to make changes. I can't figure out if it's the 750 or the software I use to make the route. I have not tried Garmin's software to make a route.

The interface looks just like the rest of the 700 series, not updated like the 755 or 255. It did come with some Mad Maps pre-installed and 2009 maps.

I really like the screens of earlier 700 series. I had a 760 from April 08 and it was nicer than this new 750 from Costco. Do they have more with 4.5? You'd have to start a poll and ask of those buying new 750s. Overall, I'm satisfied for $200 considering I paid same price for a 350 as a gift a few months ago.

1. costco.ca black friday sale..... probably.
2. not used any of the 2x5 units. seems to be the same as old screenshots shown on the web. e.g. http://hotproductdeals.net/dummy/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/...

3. voice sometime disappears (in setup clicking on voice shows no voices loaded). restarting unit fixes problem. no other bugs found.

Thanks for the information everyone!

I guess the best option may be to just wait and hope that the 760 gets a firmware update that includes the updated skins as some have suggested above. I still don't understand Garmin's version-ing schemes but maybe with more experience with Garmins it will make sense someday???

Having had my 760 for a couple weeks now, I do love it! The 265wt, a great GPS too, is going back (missing a couple of the features that I really like on the 760).

760 firmware

Seems to me that garmin is pretty good at dissemminating new software via their webupdater. If there is a 4.5 out there it may be in the beta stage. Given how much i depend on a gps when travelling I would not try it.

The 4.50 firmware was on units for a specific retailer

The features that you see on the new 7x5 series would not be possible on the 7xx series. In order to achieve the new look and features they have had to greatly upgrade both the CPU and memory speeds plus the screen refresh is 4 times as fast.

The 4.50 firmware was on units for a specific retailer and also added some Mad Maps features also. It is a special release the rest of us will never see. I emailed Garmin this week and they told me that they have been working on the next firmware release for the 7xx series for two months and they are still in the testing stage. It will mainly deal with the Route Optimizer problem and the map refresh delay during nanigation prompts.

The Skin Differences are Just Better Ergonomics

Thanks for the information rjrsw. In my original post, I was just relaying the update I got from a Garmin tech support person and asking a question. The agent told me that the skin on the 265wt is also in version 4.5 of the firmware on some 760 units. Others above reported that Costco was selling units with v4.5 of the firmware. I'm still not sure that the support agent was correct about the new skin in v4.5 though??

These skin differences that I'm talking about have little/nothing to do with needing increased cpu or graphics power. It is more of a difference in placement of some of the data on the map screen primarily having the "Next turn in" indication on the top left just left of the name of the road to turn onto... easier than scanning the display from the bottom right to the top to see these two related pieces of data (i.e.: better ergonomics). Also, the new skin has a speed indicator on the map screen and the traffic indicator is always on the screen showing no problems in green and turning to yellow and then red when traffic is slow on your route.

None of these are a show stopper for the 760 but are nice to haves... I hope they do port them over to the 760 and similar units... if they haven't already...
