Multiple Waypoints on Garmin 255W

I am still fairly new at this. I have read several posts here and at other sites which indicate that my unit should not be able to have a route with multiple waypoints.

It is fairly clear that I can not enter tours or routes which are prepared with multiple waypoints. It does seem, however that entering a new via point does not eliminate the previous via point.

While I have not actually driven this route yet, I was working on a trip I will be taking to Niagara Falls an a few weeks. I happen to enjoy driving on the Canadian side of the river on the Niagara Parkway. My ultimate goal is a motel a little north of the falls. If I ask the unit to calculate a route from home (in Cleveland) to the motel, it takes me to Fort Erie, and then on the QEW, probably because it is faster although it also might be shorter as well. So to fool the stupid thing, I created a favorite just north of Fort Erie. It routed me north to the via point and right back to the QEW again. Not giving up easily, I created a second favorite much farther to the north and told it to use that as a via point. That worked better but still not the route I wanted.

I stopped the route and started over again from home. I entered my ultimate destination first. I then added, as the first via point, the one that was closer to my destination. It gave me a good route but not quite the one I wanted. Then I added as a second via point, the one that was further from my destination. With that, I got exactly the route I wanted. The surprising thing was when I looked at the turn by turn route, both via points were shown.

I will see if this works as well as it looks when I drive it in about two weeks.

It would appear that if one wants to get the exact route, you must enter the via points in the reverse order that you will meet them. That is, think backwards from the destination.

I wonder if anyone else has experimented with this.

Well, you got me all excited. I had taken them at their word that I could only have one waypoint and had never tried adding more. I just went out to the car and grabbed my 660 and tried adding a second waypoint. However, my unit offers me two options -- replace the final destination, or replace the first waypoint. Bummer.

Mine gives a message that I get suggests that it will replace the only via point. I think the message is "add as via point". The other choice is add as destination. Did you look at the new route to see if it touched on both points? I believe the 660 is entirely different technology than the 255 so it just might not work for you.

I get the message you mention for the first waypoint, but it is clear on the second that it will replace the first -- I checked hoping the first still existed, but no such luck.

You are on to something...

What you are doing is of great interest to me. That is what I've been contemplating for some time now.
I have a favorite route from Massachusetts to Alabama, which I want to travel, and I've used Google Earth to get my waypoints. It is not so easy to plan this trip without actually being on the road, is it?

So when you have a chance to report on your multiple viapoints, be sure to post here. I'm sure there are many others wanting to do the same thing.

My use of marine GPS units did not prepare me for this issue in road navigation.

This issue should not affect you. The 880 will accept routes. This is of primary importance to those of us with only one waypoint to play with.

As far as planning a route, have you used Mapsource?

Route Planning

It helped for me that I knew the route I wanted to take. Knowing that, it is just a matter of zooming out and centering on the spot where the via point needs to go then zooming in. Tap the screen until you get something that gives you an address on the road you want to take, save it with a name and set it as a via point. It does take some trial and error to find where the points have to go when you are trying to ignore a highway and take a longer route but it can be done.

re multiple waypoints on Garmin 255W

Yep, enter your destination first, then via points working from the destination back. I use my 255W as a cheap aviation GPS (in off road mode). It works well, especially showing how far off track I am.
