Map question?

With the price of nuvi's going down so fast I have a question for the learned members of POI Factory.

If I buy a nuvi 250 for say around $100.00 new or used with 2008 maps will Garmin allow a free 2009 map update? If so,then, once downloaded can I put the map on my nuvi 750 instead of the nuvi 250? That way I get a map upgrade for the 750 and get a second nuvi for my wife at almost no cost.

Any thoughts

I assume this should work.

I assume this should work only if the website does not verify the registered unit. But I have not tried updating map thru the internet.

If the garmin site checks the unit first before it download the map then it would not work because you will only see the map updated on the registered nuvi 250 and will not allow it to load it to a 750.

.

If you purchase a new GPS unit from a retail location (ie you have a valid retail receipt) and it has the 2009 maps, you will be able to get a free update for the maps. You can load this update onto a single GPS unit for which is it compatible. It does not have to be the original unit.

If you purchase a used unit, you will not be eligible for a free update.

I thought

I thought that the installation key for the update was tied to the serial number on the unit it's purchased for. Guess I was wrong. But the one thing I do know is that he can't update both units with one purchase. If he installs the map in his 750 then the 250 will retain the older map.

You could try it but it most likely it will not work

When I downloaded the free map update for my 760 the unlock code for the new map was tied to the serial number of my 760. The serial number of the unit you used to qualify for the map upgrade is used to generate the map unlock code according to what Garmin told me.

You could try it but it most likely it will only work on the unit that was used to qualify.

If you buy it new and with luck you may get one that has already has the 2009 maps on it. I think depends on when it was actually manufactured.

I just bought a Nuvi 200w few weeks ago (new) and I'm very suprise it came with the 2009 maps on it eventhough this model is been on the market for a while. I guess they put the latest maps on it when it was actually came out from the factory.

What maps does you 750 have?

If your 750 has 2008 maps and you buy a new 250 with old 2008 maps, the 250 would qualify for free 2009 map upgrade and unlock code, but the 2009 maps would not work on your 750 (without purchasing an unlock code for it).

But if your 750 came with 2009 maps, and you bought a 250 with 2008 maps and free 2009 upgrade DVD and unlock code, you could use that DVD to add maps to your 750 that it doesn't have. Because a 750 w/2009 maps preinstalled has an unlock code for all of North America NT (except Mexico). You could find your unlock code at My Garmin, My Maps, Manage Maps. Then you can crank that 25 digit number into Mapsource. I added maps of Canadian border provences on SD for my 750 which had 2009 USA maps preinstalled, and it works. So if your 750 has 2009 Canadian maps, you could add USA maps.

Maps you create on SD/microSD work for any unit you had proper unlock codes for in Mapsource when you write out the mapset. So if both your units were unlocked for 2009 maps, one SD/microSD of additional maps could be used in either unit.
