Red Light Camera Locations

I have loaded the red light poi to my Garmin Nuvi 350. Should I see icons on the screen where they are located? What will the unit do when I approach one of the locations?

Thanks for your help. John

The price for most tickets given at red-light cameras in

Los Angeles has more than doubled...

According to an article in the Los Angeles Times today about 8 out of 10 tickets issued by red-light cameras are for rolling right turns or "California" stops. The fine in the past has been $159 instead of the state established $381 fine. The rational was it was felt that it wasn’t as dangerous as running straight through the red light.

But after legal review officials have concluded that the practice used by other cities was correct and that Los Angeles should do the same. The new fines will be imposed immediately.

I guess the red-light poi just became more valuable in Los Angeles… shock

I have the red light camera

I have the red light camera POI file loaded on my c340 and as I was driving the other day, I got the alert for a camera. The distance it stated was a little strange. It said 0.01olz. Other cameras in the area had similar results except the 3 letters after the distance would change. Any idea what caused that?

That is the code that identifies the location for me. That way I know what intersection you are talking about if there is a problem or if it needs to be removed.

You should be able to, if you also have loaded the graphic files associated with POI

Actually there are certain

Actually there are certain places where they like to frequent. Kinda like the cop locations. They need to sit in certain areas to get a good view of the license and the person driving.

Usually you can tell these places by looking at the ground (look for a big dead spot.. for example on 370 as you drive, if you look at the grassy areas you can see big dead spots sometimes. That's where the cop likes to park his/her car and setup camp).

Likewise the vans usually mark the places (I find that they don't use the same people daily so I guess they spray the ground to mark the location the van needs to be parked in).

So if you observe their location for a while, you can get a rough idea of what spots they like to hide in.

(Though is there even a category for this kind of POI? I've contributed to other maps like trapster with these locations but these vans and police cars aren't there forever. So I just tend to slow down in those areas just in case).

I live in Albuquerque, and I'm interested to know whether it's possible to see what's listed in the POI file so I can compare it to an official list and be sure they match.

Does anyone know the answer?

Thanks.

If not, and you provided Miss POI with the missing location, she'll revise the file, but I'd be shocked if it isn't exact if there is a published official list.

simulate red light

I did not hear my alerts after upgrading my map. I reloaded and checked all names. I also added some custom poi's from this wonderful site and did not hear those alerts either. I'm currently running a simulation on my Garmin 660 to see if it will sound the correct alerts with a redlight warning set as a midway point.

will this sound the alert? it is giving me the turn by directions.

Also is there a way to speed up the simulation?

Thanks

debblr wrote:

You can't make the simulated ride move faster, but you can set your location to a spot right before the alert should trigger. You should then pick a destination that will take you through the test intersection. You should not router "TO" the test POI location.

I'm new to this site, but have a stupid question.
What good does the "redlight camera" warning do
for everyone? There seems to be lots of discussion
on this forum about this feature, getting the POIs
to work, changing the tone, etc.

Does everyone RUN other red lights WITHOUT cameras
or something? If you stop at red lights like normal humans, why would you even need this? Treat every
red light as if it had a camera...everyone on the
road would be better for it.

Not trying to stir up trouble....I guess I'm
just missing the point?

If you are an out of towner in a city that you don't know you may find yourself rear ending someone who is stopping suddenly at a yellow or red light. It is just a tool to use to be more aware of your surroundings.

I do my best to never run red lights. Has it ever happened? Yes. I also speed, swear, drink, and look at other women. Not neccesarily in that order. Unfortunately Garmin hasn't come up with an elegant solution for my last 3 vices. Excuse me while I get back to my 50 Hail Mary's - string me up now.

Audible alert missing with screen visual on red light cameras

I downloaded from here the NYC red light camera file onto my Garmin NUVI 350. Of the one location I know for sure (been busted) I see on the unit's screen a circle with an uppercase 'P' inside. But no audio; "ding" or otherwise. Questions:

a) is this, in fact, the camera indicator on my screen?

b) with no audible currently, will the mp3 download thing work?

Did you use POI Loader to load from your computer to the 350? There are no custom icons associated with POIs unless you load them along with the POI file. The circle with a "P" sounds like a built-in POI (perhaps a parking garage).

Have you read http://www.poi-factory.com/node/85 and http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6764 ?

On the 660 there is a checkbox to turn on Proximity alerts (for those you have set) -- wrench/ProximityPoints/Change.

I have a Navigon 2100 (MN6) and running POI-Warner3 and getting the updates here for red light cameras.

Unfort, if I update to MN7 it disables POI-Warner3. Since I would like to update my maps do I really need POI-Warner3 just for my purpose of red light cameras? Or can I dump it and still get my red light camera file here and it will work with MN6 or MN7?

St. Louis Cameras

Did St. Louis turn off their red light cameras? The one a block from my house is never flashing... thanks

Nassau County, NY

There has been talk in the past couple of weeks about authorizing red light cameras in Nassau County, NY (on Long Island) It's come up in the state legislature the past couple of years, without being passed, but now the county executive is talking about RLC as a way to raise $7-$10 million to close a hole in the budget (because RLCs are all about safety, and not revenue enhancement).

I got caught by one in NYC last month (just before getting a 760), and living in Nassau, if this happens, I'll be looking forward to adding RLC locations to the file...

do I need to delete the redlight camera information everytime I upload to to the garmin or can I just keep the same name and it will overwrite?

POILoader will overwrite

debblr wrote:

When you run POILoader, it will overwrite the poi.gpi file on your GPS. If you load multiple POI files, the loader compiles them into one file which is then uploaded to your unit.

some info please

I loaded the red light and speed camera files and get the ding...ding about 1/2km before the intersection.

All the cameras in Winnipeg do one lane only and to my knowledge there are no two-camera intersections. I expected the alert to sound when I was going through the intersection in the camera lane and not when I am in the not-camera lane as the rest area alert works.

Have I done the install incorrectly or am I expecting too much?

Thank you for any clarifying information. H.

That's the way it is. The coordinates are set to the middle of the intersection. Miss POI and Jon are working on adding directionals and capture angles so you will only get alerted when going in a direction the camera will capture, but it will probably take a while before it's rolled out for everyone.

Search Worked

I was going to ask if there was a way to only activate the speed notification if I was speeding but then I decided to try a search first. It worked and I have made the modification to my .csv file using excel. Next is the test to see if it works but I have faith.

There are intersections in NYC with red light cameras in 3 out of 4 ways of an intersection. The cameras usually flashed behind you, but I have found one that flashes in front of you as well.

Alarms

Pretty much all has bin said, except maybe the annoying thing that happens one my 765T. It only does this if i have a course plotted. Because one shouldn't be pushing buttons when driving, i sometimes do some searching at a red light. If it happenes to be a red light Camera intersection, be prepared for some grief. A screen comes up telling you that you are at a red light Camera intersection. You will need to hit the OK or Cancel buttons for it to back to the previous screen you were at. It comes up about every 10 seconds or so. Its darn right annoying.

Oh, if you want to cut the alert distance down to something more meaningful, load the files in manual mode and set a distance alert for 200 meters.

Should be same folder as the related .POI

Hi Kevin, as I understand from the discussion above, it should be in the same folder as the related .POI file (same name, different extension).

How can I do that and what would this be named.

I can go inside any file and remove the text for those alarm.

If you are talking about the speed camera file, you probably have a number in the file name. There are over 30 locations that do not have a speed associated by the @ symbol, so those would default to a number in the file name.

Check the filenames

cdugal wrote:

There is no need to go inside the file. This doesn't only happen with speed camera files - it can happen with any POI file that is loaded with POI Loader. If a number is part of the filename, POI Loader treats it as a speed file and uses that number as the speed.

If you load McDonalds.csv, no speed alerts will happen. If you rename the same file to McDonalds7.csv and load it, then every time you drive past a McDonalds at more than 7 miles per hour you get a speed alert.

The lesson is, never use any number in a filename for a POI file unless you WANT a speed alert.

Check the filenames and take out the numbers, and run POI Loader again. It will overwrite the unwanted speed alerts.

I finally changed the name of my 7-11 store file to Seven-Eleven. I run POI Loader in manual, but I got tired of changing the alert option every time...
