205W new to us on Black Friday - Impressions

My wife's been asking for a GPS for over a year now, so I/we decided this would be the year to get her one.

Her little sister (traveling sales rep) was given a 205W by her boss on a weekend we helped her move, so I got to play with it first. I was so impressed with the basic little unit that I decided it was the minimum we would need... I like the widescreen.

I missed a sale earlier in the month at AAFES and was miffed... I was going to surprise my wife by putting one on layaway and giving it to her on XMas morning. Anyway, Black Friday came around, and we got AAFES to price match Dick's ad for a 205W for $149, plus used a $10 coupon... since they don't charge sales tax, we got it for $139 out the door!

I'm proud to have spotted one in the "clearance" bin after the salesman said they'd sold out first thing that morning from other folks doing the same price-matching routing. "Clearance" means the unit was returned for any reason... not sure why, but I spotted it and got it cheap.

Wife is happy to not have to call me if she gets turned around (which happens easily), and I'm happy not to have to pretend to be a GPS using my maps over a cell phone uplink.

The only geeky dissappointments I have so far are that it doesn't look like the 205W supports extra downloadable voices (tried adding Dr. Spookly, and it doesn't work) and doesn't have TTS support (too much pre-purchase info to sift through... missed the significance of this one). As a guidance unit, it holds up well. We've enjoyed seeing which alternate routes through town it would take if left to its own devices.

Looking forward to adding POIs and other customizations. The back-seaters now have something new to watch besides movies.

TTS is Nice

I always tell anyone who asks to make sure they get TTS, but at the price you got the 205w I wouldn't argue too much smile

Check out http://www.poi-factory.com/node/18725 and see that you can still have voice alerts. You have to convert mp3 to wav to do it.

205 w

It's a shame you didn't find this site first. TTS is a feature you don't want to do with out.
The price is where everyone is selling it today CyberMonday.

Run the Web Updater on the unit. It may need a new version to run the voice. It has to be in the Garmin/Voices folder on the unit and selected.

Thanks for the tips - ran

Thanks for the tips - ran WebUpdater last night. It upgraded the unit from 2.90 to the latest version. I havent had time to see if addl voices are supported in the new SW, but at the price we got it for, I'm not too upset.

I've been reading all about the .wav alerts for POIs and such. Backed up the original file load last night so I can play with a net. Thinking about adding some custom alerts in the voice files.

Wish there was a Mr. T voice, though... oh, the fun I'd have with that one, fool!

I believe the Mt. T voice is available from celebrityvoices.com

Voices

My kids (and I) am excited that the software update (from 2.90 to 4.60) has enabled additional voices.

Dr. Nightmare is running fine now... when you go off route, he announces "I must consult my magic book!"

The kids would like Darth Vader... rolleyes

Happy with the purchase!

Woot!
